Domestic Violence a Major Risk to Pregnant Women

I found this story on Yahoo's news service; I didn't include the link to it because Yahoo's news links tend to expire after a week, and I didn't want to give anyone a bad link. LONDON (Reuters Health) - Violence during pregnancy presents one of the biggest risks to mothers and their fetuses, and... Sign in to see full entry.

I've been taking it easy for a day or two

In the blogging world, it's almost axiomatic that you have to blog daily or you start to fall flat on your face in terms of the number of people willing to visit your site. That's certainly true of this domestic-violence blog. I'm still fighting off a bug, and I have another doctor appointment to... Sign in to see full entry.

3/7/2003 Writing Prompt: Alcohol

Alcohol and abuse have traditionally been linked; some believe (without evidence to back it up) that getting sober will automatically stop the abuse, while others believe that some men use alcoholism and drunkenness as an excuse to abuse. As usual, everything from the boldface title on down is the... Sign in to see full entry.

Another must-read BN blog

I highly recommend this blog by Shthousemouse1, about her experiences as the victim of emotional abuse. She's right - we really are better off if we are physically abused, because physical injuries are something you can take pictures of and document. Emotional abuse is more painful because people... "I can't do anything right"

This is probably going to be very brief because I've covered some of this material before. But one of the hallmarks of some forms of abuse is the feeling I described in the title - "I can't do anything right." That's particularly true of verbal abusers, who are the worst "blame the victim" offenders... Sign in to see full entry.

3/6/2003 Writing Prompt: Signs

This one is very easy (thanks, Jemmie!). As usual, everything from the boldface title on down is my entry into the prompt: Sign, sign, everywhere a sign JoAnne saw the signs without realizing it when she was dating her abusive husband. When he thought she wasn't looking, he would be deliberately... Sign in to see full entry.

Really, REALLY old Writing Prompt: Ice

I'm catching up on Jemmie211's writing prompts - what else can I say? As usual, everything below the boldface title is part of the prompt (upper limit: 150 words): Like Ice Something he said made her blood run like ice in her veins. Gradually, he directed the conversation to his own preferences - so... Sign in to see full entry.

Animal cruelty

I would strongly encourage you to read this article - it's about a man who got five years in prison for abusing his wife's cat. I thought this was an appropriate story for this blog because animal abuse has traditionally been linked to spousal battery - in other words, domestic-violence counselors... It's nice to see...

that you all are reading Leave Me Alone, You Lunatic. It's another good description of the way in which domestic violence is actually lived. It's also nice to see that so many of you are writing about domestic violence in blogs. The more, the healthier for all of us. Blogs from those of you who have... Sign in to see full entry.

3/5/2003 Writing Prompt: Words

With apologies to Jemmie for my change in game plan yesterday, this is my entry into today's Writing Prompt. As usual, everything from the boldface headline on down is part of the writing prompt. Words Hurt Words really can hurt you, contrary to what the old nursery rhyme might say. In fact,... Sign in to see full entry.

About this Blog
The name of the post is derived from a Francis Schaeffer book, and intended to rebut something I'd seen on the Internet. The blog itself is about what I've learned about relationships from the ones I've had, and the ones I've observed. It will not be pleasant to read, and might wander off-topic occasionally, but is intended to be a long-term blog reading like a public journal.
