Update:

Called the hospital, since there was no word from my grandson. The floor nurse told me the surgery went beautifully, without a hitch. My daughter's in her room, talking and able to eat (if you call Jell-O and broth eating), and will probably go home in "a day or two." Color me happy! Sign in to see full entry.

Mental Health Day

Back when I lived on Planet 9 to 5, there were times my co-workers did thoughtless little things - and on my not-so-good days it seemed they were being jackasses on purpose, deliberately pushing my buttons. These days I realize it was never about me, they were playing out their own little plots and... Sign in to see full entry.

The Bro Code

When you're a kid and somebody picks on your brother, they're asking for it. It's a rule, part of the code, that any fool who messes with yours, messes with you. Sometimes after you've been at the mercy of miserable circumstance yourself, if you've been hanging on by the skin of your teeth and... Sign in to see full entry.

Good Deeds and Fair Skies.

There was a problem at the Community Center. It's been a trifling irritant for weeks. The ladies' room commode, potty, throne, loo - whatchamacallit - has grown more and more prone to problems. Sometimes the flush handle pops loose, and then it won't clear the bowl so the next visitor will feel... Sign in to see full entry.

Route 66 Festival

There was a TV series 40 years or so ago about two guys driving along Route 66 - the road that goes from points east all the way to Los Angeles. The highway was like one of the characters - always some scenic location or roadside diner where the two guys encounter bad guys or romance or whatever,... Sign in to see full entry.

D-Day.

I was pushing nine years old when the original D-Day happened. It was in all the news- reels at the Saturday matinees all summer long: black & white "short subjects" of the bombers flying low to attack the Nazi fortifications, scenes of the landing craft and men in the water, sometimes swimming... "Summer Complaint"

After months of daring to think I was in control of my own gut, I woke up in the wee hours Wednesday a.m. with a violent case of what Mother G used to call 'summer complaint.' My first mother-in-law was like Marie Barrone (Everybody Loves Raymond) on steroids. "I do it out of love," was something... Sign in to see full entry.

Tuesday...

Got up after six, got ready to head for The Center a few minutes early. I was looking forward to the distraction. Being there takes my mind off the darkness my youngest son is going through, and the all-out battle with cancer my older daughter is facing. Baleful was back. Before she could begin her... On The Road...

About the same time Jack Kerouac was writing his story of that title - a book that many picked up and adopted as a philosophy of life back in the day - I was a kid trapped in a small town where "everybody knows your name" and then some. I wanted to get the heck out, leave the dust of Salkum behind... Sign in to see full entry.

I don' wanna... an' you can't make me...

Mama used to say when someone took a notion to resist all suggestions (and her orders) that they had their back up. Don't get your back up about that, you're never gonna win. Not as long as the Good Lord makes willow switches... But for the past few days I've had my back up. Tell me blue skies and... Sign in to see full entry.
