A Whole 'Nother Writing Class

There were seven women who showed up for The Center's "Write Your Own Story" class. Three from last year, four newbies. Sara ordered 3-ring binders through Amazon on Tues. for under $2 each. Office Max's price for the same thing was over $5, and I just didn't think - even with a sale coupon - that... Sign in to see full entry.

What to do about Al...

As you may have noticed, I've come to a big fat block in the middle of the road. I can't seem to get over, under or around it. The sign on it is a question: What are you going to do about bringing Al's story to a satisfactory ending. I've thought of a number of things. Have the girls go on strike,... Just when you think it can't get much worse...

At The Center yesterday things were kinda slow. It wasn't raining or snowing, the phone was therefore quiet. It tends to go stark staring cray-cray any time it rains in the a.m., especially when it's a full moon, or within one cycle of such. I got there early, so as to get a head start on things.... Al Says, Part 6

(in the ladies' room, the conversation continues) “Why Josie, what a thing to say,” Marian said. “I’m sure he didn’t intend to …..” “Cop a feel? Oh, yes he did! ” Josie said. “And you can’t deny he’s always grabbing ahold any time he talks to you.” “Well, that’s because we have a close relationship.... Sign in to see full entry.

A Perfect Day to Library

We've been having a sweet sampling of summer the last few days. Friday and Saturday were each 78 degrees F, two records broken in a row. If we went outside in a sweatshirt, we peeled it off quickly. The previous Sunday I’d skipped my shift because it was blowing snow and slick underfoot. A new lady... Sign in to see full entry.

Al Says -- part 5

Josie was in the back room at the computer typing in the meter readings when Al came up behind her chair, leaned over, his right arm across her shoulder with the hand a bare inch or two away from cupping her breast. When he put his head down to say something in her left ear, she jumped, startled. As... Sign in to see full entry.

Al Says -- Part 4

Marian was at the office as usual on Friday morning, at her desk when the girls arrived. Josie asked how she was feeling as she went back to the coffee pot. “I’m feeling much better, thank you for asking,” she said with a smile. “I know you managed just fine without me, but just to be sure, tell me... Al Says, Part 3

Their tiff happened at closing time on Wednesday, the day before the Council Meeting. On Thursday evening the council would consider Al’s choice. Such appointments are generally pro forma, and Al had told Elyse he would expect her to show up for work on the following Monday. He’d called the mayor’s... Sign in to see full entry.

Al Says - revised, part 2

After Marian stormed out, Al leaned back in his swivel chair, put his hands behind his head, stretched out full length and grinned smugly. He’d never seen his deputy so upset: her face was actually bent out of shape. If looks could kill, I’d be sick as a dog, he thought, chuckling aloud. Silly old... Sign in to see full entry.

Al Says -- revision

The trouble started when City Clerk Al Wilder hired a girl to replace Ethel Schmidt. Ethel had been the face of the city clerk's office long before Al was elected, the one non- patronage employee of the office. (The other clerks were friends or relatives of political friends to whom Al owed... Sign in to see full entry.
