I always wonder
When someone who has been that active and then suddenly loses their ability to do the things they have always done, if that isn't what really causes their passing.

It's always sad to lose a friend. And it must also be sad to know there must have been some very painful times in his life, even if he himself was the cause of that pain...

I too am sorry that you have lost a friend and like your nurse there, I am inclined to believe that his passing was a far gentler way to go than what he was facing.
As for families...who knows.
