Hi Tech Hijack

Got up this a.m., started the coffee, took my pills. The phone rang, son Rusty checking to make sure we had a breakfast date. Put in my earplugs (hearing aids) and was surprised to realize the wall clock in the kitchen actually ticks, each time the second-hand moves. Humph! Never noticed that. Went... Today is Summer's first "Fest"

School was out last Friday, our HS graduated 540 - so now there'll be a few days of sleeping late and just vedging out before extreme boredom sets in and they begin looking for a summer job. This of course doesn't apply to certain ambitious kids who lined up their job at Annie's Frozen Custard stand... Sign in to see full entry.

It was a dark and stormy morning...

The WYOS group met at The Center yesterday, all ten of us bespattered with rain drops, our ears ringing from the thunderstorm; it's May in Illinois but the April storms continue. Our writing topic of the day was "The road not taken." What would have happened if you'd made a different choice early on... Sign in to see full entry.

RIP Mable...

Mable Farrington was a volunteer at The Center for 30 years, from the time of her retirement at 65 until she was past 95. She answered the phone, helped people remember to take their glasses with them when they were done playing bingo, answered questions about other services for seniors, did some... The Rube Goldberg Factor

Life can be just one huge Rube Goldberg machine where unrelated things tumble and roll in a kind of random but not quite accidental way until something falls off a high point and rolls down a slope to knock something else off balance. It may or may not work out in your favor. It can leave you... Sign in to see full entry.

Moving on - but not today...

I finally realized it's really time to shake the dust off my size 8-1/2 Mediums and find an apartment, preferably in a senior complex. I need to be all on one level, where someone else is in charge of maintenance. Pulling weeds, skimming the debris out of the pond, painting porch rails, weeding the... Sign in to see full entry.

The Bird Cage

I saw a photo on today's online MSNBC home page of a bar in Missoula, Montana called The Silver Dollar. There was a story going around when I was too young to be served in any bar in Seattle, that in Montana they'd sell a drink to anyone who was tall enough to rest their chin on the bar (bad luck if... Evaluation...

When the adult ed department at SIU presents a speaker at some off-campus venue, they ask people in the audience to fill out an evaluation form. The questions include opinions and comments about the speaker/topic itself, whether the presenter seems knowledgeable, and etc. They ask bread-and-butter... Sign in to see full entry.

"What's in a name?" was my writing prompt for the group...

I received a warm welcome back from the memoir writers at The Center yesterday - they liked my new hairdo, which I call The Brillo Pad. Sandy ran last week's session while I was under the weather at home - I wish I could hear some of those stories, but... There were 10 of us at the session, but only... Sign in to see full entry.

Can You Hear Me Now???

My kids have been bugging me to get my hearing checked. Again. I had it checked 7 or 8 years ago because I was having difficulty following conversations while I was in a crowd, or at a restaurant - any time I wasn't face-to-face with one or two. Words would be mis- heard, or I'd focus on the one... Sign in to see full entry.
