For years on end Washing by machine Wringing away frothing suds Rinsing in big tubs, Then wringing again, Hanging garments out to flap In the breeze Sheets and work shirts, Trousers and smocks Tea towels and socks Hankies and nappies They danced on the hills hoist With gay abandon til dry, Then brought inside, folded From the line in neat piles Children’s, husband’s, mine, Bathroom and bedroom, Finally down to the kitchen And ironing done By the old wood stove With flat irons heated well Clipped...
