Romertopf!

It all started with the tagine, the experimental cookery crockery. Today, it's another thrift store find, a clay pot called by the Germans who make it, Roman Pot. They base it on an ancient clay cooking pot used by the Romans. So, you may have seen them around, an oblong terra cotta pot with a lid.... Sign in to see full entry.

Shelling out for special eggs

One of the perks of Charlie's new workshop location is that it's only about 3 miles down the road from the Asian Pacific Market. We stopped there yesterday afternoon, and so this morning, I had a couple of duck eggs for breakfast! And in the next week I'll be enjoying poaching little quail eggs in... Saint Patrick in the Kitchen

The Day of Irishness is upon us! I've told Charlie that I'll be making corned beef hash with eggs for 2nd Breakfast if he cares to partake. There's also a medium sized cabbage on the counter, and some artichokes just out of the oven, for a touch of green. Something with potatoes seems called for,... Sign in to see full entry.

Meatloaf

I just stuck one in the oven. It's pretty classic: beef/pork mixed with bread crumbs, ketchup, and an egg. I also added in some fried onion bits--the kind that go on green bean casserole, and they will add flavor, though the crispy will be gone. I was looking for ground pork at the grocery store and... Another tagine today

Eggplant, leeks, sugar snap peas, and shrimp, cooked in chicken broth and tikka masala curry sauce... I watched it carefully this time, and it was ready in an hour and a half without scorching. There was plenty of broth this time, and a dollop of sour cream made it very tasty indeed! Sign in to see full entry.

Well, that could have been a lot worse!

In the midst of my very-snug-kitchen cleaning, the dishwasher was open and the lower rack not entirely unloaded. If I placed the sharp knives in it point up, this would be a very different tale. Happily, for other obvious reasons, they always go in point down. Because when I reached up to yank down... Sign in to see full entry.

Tagine

The very day after Taps wrote about getting out her beautiful Moroccan tagine cooker, I found one at the thrift store, and brought it home. I did some research, got the recommended heat diffuser to go on the stove burner so the pottery doesn't crack from the direct heat, and have now cooked two... Sign in to see full entry.

Kitchen/potting shed report

Yesterday I potted up two newly sproutting avocado seeds--the big ones from those humongous 'alligator pears' that show up seasonally at the Asia Pacific Market. The avocado itself may not be good, brown where it should be butter-yellow, but the seeds are pretty easy to start so at least I get a... Sign in to see full entry.

Japanese griddle reprise

Last time, for Christmas feasting, we got out the 'zojirushi' Japanese griddle that sits in the center of the table, surrounded by bowls of bite-sized meats and vegies. Charlie, his housemates Rob and Vale and I all sat around cooking our own dinners to our own tastes. There were sauces and spices,... Sign in to see full entry.
