Religious Fanatisism

Religious fanatisism has been at the core of violence through the ages. It has been the core of cultism and witch trials ending in the sacrifice of lives because of the interpretation of words by man. How is it possible that the same words in the same books can be intepreted by one man to do violence and another to spread peace? Are the words so broad in their meaning? An evil man is an evil man and using religion to justify an evil deed is no different than a man who kills another man over a possession.

Are most of the acts committed by muslims? I assume this is a generalization to support this wonderful poem. How may acts of violence were committed in the name of religion between Protestants and Catholics? I agree with the core of your message and certainly with the message of this poem but I am careful not to generalize. However, I have not done the research to compare the number of deaths at the hand of one religion to another.

Every day someone commits a hideous crime in the name of God , Unfortunately since most of these acts are commited by Muslims it is not giving Islam a good name. Your post hits the nail on the head: killers are killers, but many now think killers HAVE TO BE MUSLIMS.I think it is time to stop protesting and start looking for a way to stop the faith being hijaked for merderous intents.

I dislike to take exception to your comment, Afzal; but motive is not just a "point" to "argue" . . . it is the summation of the extremist's beliefs: Islam is the only true religion and Mohammed was its prophet.

And I'm not just pointing out Islam. "Non-believers," of all faiths, have been murdered by the "true-believers"; and not all the killers have been illiterate either, witness the physicians who wanted to destroy and be destroyed for their "faith"; to be martyred and . . . for what?

Or shall we subsitute the word "misguided" so as not to offend, when no offense is meant?

Killers may be killers, but killings are motivated by a cause . . . hate, love, money; unless the murderer is insane. Are you then implying that certain muslims are "driven to insane acts" because of their faith, even college educated physicians. . . let alone the ignorant and unschooled?

And yes -- to point out the obvious . . . killers are killers.

And the killing continues in the name of some god or another. Just as long as there is "someone" else to lay the blame on. And...true enough...the God of Abraham has worked so for, hasn't it? joab

I agree with you, Afzal. The motivation to kill is inspired by a corrupt interpretation of any religion. Those that kill will be forever outnumbered by those that don't in all religions. And also among atheists too.

Those are my thoughts.
