As Long as There Are Inner Wars, There Will be Outer Wars

This past Monday was the third anniversary of the Iraqi War. And while it is probably no surprise that I have always been against the war, when it comes to wars, this one is not my number one on my list. The war I am most concerned with is the war within. Every day there is a battle within each of us between light and dark, between love and hate, between selfishness and selflessness. While most wars eventually end, this one is continual. And though each day is a different battle, the enemy can... Sign in to see full entry.

Walking a Path With Heart

Want to end wars? Want to bring peace to the world? It’s really pretty simple. Don Juan, the Yaqui master who taught Carols Castaneda, explained it this way: Look at every path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary. Then ask yourself and yourself alone one question. This question is one that only a very old man asks. My benefactor told me about it once when I was young and my blood was too vigorous for me to understand it. Now I do understand it. I will tell you... Sign in to see full entry.

The Divine is Tapping on my Shoulder to Offer a Lesson

Okay. Whoever is trying to get my attention has gotten it. I’ve written here recently about the loud yelling of my name in the middle of the night, so loud that it woke me up, only to find no one in my room, including my wife who has been out of town. Well, the yelling has stopped. Now it is tapping. On Thursday evening last, about 2:00 am I was sound asleep. I was awakened by who I thought was my wife who was tapping on my shoulder. I felt the tapping for a bit before I realized what it was. I... Sign in to see full entry.

Life is One State of Consciousness, Death Another, and Ego Still Another

This is the next installment in my conversations with Death. It's a little long, but I think you will like it. It’s three o’clock in the morning, and I can’t sleep. I keep thinking about what Death said when last we met. Two things stick out in my mind: First, when Death said, “We think you’re ready for the next step,” who is we? And second, how could I see a glimmer of light in the depth of the darkness that is death? To answer these questions, I’d have to do something I had never done before –... Sign in to see full entry.

My List of the Sacred

Every religion has its sacred objects or sites deemed holy because of their relationship with a particular deity or prophet. Christianity has the Shroud of Turin, the Mount of Olives, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Via Dolorosa. Judaism has the Torah, the Western Wall and Rachel's Tomb. Islam has Mecca, Medina, the Dome of the Rock, the prophet Mohammed's beard hair and a deer skin that had portions of the Quran, dictated by the prophet himself, written on it. I too have sacred... So Dude, Does Anyone Else Know You Scream Like a Seven-Year-Old Girl?

I opened my car door and slid in. I love the way the leather feels as you slide across it, it’s suppleness lightly tickles the skin. I slipped the key into the ignition and started the car. As I glanced up in the rearview mirror, those bottomless-pit-for-eyes glared at me from the back seat. The scream I let out, well let’s just say that it was good none of my buddies were with me. But the leather is now never going to be the same after I am done cleaning up the mess. “Jeez Death! You scared the... Sign in to see full entry.

One Cannot Find Without Loss, Death Said

I sat uncomfortably in the diner booth, springs from the bench clawing at my glutes. Death sat across from me, staring. “What are you looking at,” I asked defiantly. I knew why Death looked at me that way. But when confronting Death, you've got to put on a strong face. It’s like when you find yourself unexpectedly face-to-face with a bear. You don’t want to show your fear. Death just continued the “stare”. If you have never had Death stare at you, you’re lucky. The glare coming from the... Sign in to see full entry.

While Attachments Comfort, They Usually Define

From the moment we are born, our life is about attachments – attachment to things that comfort us, that ally our fears. Our first attachment is usually to the person with whom we suckle, or who feeds us. Then we attach to inanimate objects. And for the rest of our lives, for most of us, it is a continual parade of objects, or people to attach to: binkys, teddy bears, bicycles, special toys, friends, family, pets, cars, girl-or-boyfriends, boats, guns, etc. Attachments are wonderful because they... Do Angels Yell?

It’s happened three times now in the last four weeks. The first time it happened I was in the middle of a great dream, when out of nowhere a voice yelled my name. It was so loud that it woke me up. It was in that kind of panic-laced voice that means there was trouble. I turned over quickly to my wife, only to find her quietly reading a book. When I asked her what the problem was, she looked at me in a confused way and said that nothing was the matter. When I asked her why she yelled my name, she... Sign in to see full entry.
