Halfway to the Elite 8,

and the question of the day seemed to be can anyone beat a Big East team other than another Big East team? Up until tonigh the answer has been a nearly umanimous “No!” Through Thursday night the Big East teams combined for a 14-2 record in the tourney, was already guaranteed at least one Final Four... Cinderella is alive, and lonely.

It’s somewhat surprising. I expected at least two, possibly three, teams seeded #9 or lower to make it to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. I wouldn’t have been surprised if the two or three were all double-digit seeds. But the only team seeded lower than 5 to make the Sweet Sixteen is 12th... Sign in to see full entry.

Worst Wins, Best Loses

New Jersey Institute of Technology (1-18) ended the longest Division I basketball losing streak with a 61-51 thumping of Bryant (3-16) last night. It was ironic that NJIT, considered the worst team in the nation after losing 51 straight, would finally win on the same night that #1 Wake Forest (16-1)... Sign in to see full entry.

And then there was one…

And then there was one… And the one remaining undefeated team out of 347 Division I basketball programs is a North Carolina team – just not the North Carolina team as in UNC Chapel Hill. Sigh. And, as you all are probably aware by now, it wasn’t that other North Carolina powerhouse residing at... Sign in to see full entry.

Right and hating it.

North Carolina’s shot at a perfect season came to an embarrassing halt much sooner than I expected Sunday night. Unheralded Boston College (13-2) spanked the Heels (13-1) 85-78 at Chapel Sunday. The end to a possible running of the table came just four days after stating I did not expect Carolina... Sign in to see full entry.

Happy basketball New Year!

The Detroit Pistons extended their current winning streak to five with a New Years’ Eve short-handed victory over the New Jersey Nets and the North Carolina Tarheels finished off an 84-61 win at Nevada just minutes into 2009. It doesn’t get any better than that for a dvoted Pistons and Tarheels fan.... Sign in to see full entry.

No where to go but up

The nightmare, daymare – the monstrous train wreck that was Detroit Lions football in 2008 came to a merciful, if ignomious end, with a 31-21 loss at Green Bay on Sunday. The Lions characteristically found creative ways to blow a game they could have won to lay claim to the dubious honor of enduring... Sign in to see full entry.

Today is the beginning of a great weekend

…for devoted fans of the University of North Carolina Tarheels, including yours truly. The football edition of Carolina sports face a tough West Virginia squad in the Meineke Car Care Bowl early this afternoon. Tomorrow the mighty Heels, basketball version, end an eight day holiday break with a home... Sign in to see full entry.

It’s semi-official, the Atlantic Coast Conference is the top conference!

Ho-hum, you might say, the ACC has been rated the number one or number two basketball conference in the land for almost as far back as anyone alive can remember. But when was the last time the sports loving segment of the population considered the possibility of the ACC being the best football... Sign in to see full entry.

Taking consolation in basketball.

Last weekend was the pits in football, college and pro, as far as I’m concerned. I was looking for the North Carolina Tarheels to bounce back from a disappointing two-point loss to Maryland with a Senior Day home win over nearby rival North Carolina State on Saturday. And on Sunday I had a gut... Sign in to see full entry.

What a difference a week can make.

Last Friday my favorite college football team, the University of North Carolina Tarheels were ranked 16th in the nation, sported a 7-2 overall record, and appeared to be the clear cut favorite to win the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division. The Heels held the tie-breaker against Miami, the... Sign in to see full entry.

Detroit updates

The AI era got off to a promising start Friday night, but fizzled by games end. Iverson led the Pistons with 24 points and 6 assists, but also committed 4 turnovers and was regularly beaten on defense in the second half of a 103-96 loss to the New Jersey Nets on the road. Not to worry. AI’s exposure... Sign in to see full entry.

Iverson & Culpepper move to the Motor City!

The Detroit Pistons made short work of the Charlotte Bobcats despite the absence of just traded Chauncy Billups and Antonio McDyess, and without Allen Iverson, the payoff of the blockbuster three-for-one trade. Project Cheikh Samb was the third Piston moving to Denver in exchange for the prolific... Sign in to see full entry.

Pistons Undefeated!

Okay, they've only played one game and that was a home win over the Indiana Pacers. But it's a start in a season that many think will be the start of a downhill slide in Detroit. Bull! There are two constants for the Motor City that have nothing to do with automobiles, the Tigers, or the Lions. The... Sign in to see full entry.

North Carolina is ranked again,

and I’m not even talking about the basketball team. Oh, the Tarheels are going to be ranked in the first college basketball polls later this week, and probably as the preseason number one team in the nation. That’s a no-brainer for a squad that returns all five starters, including the reigning... Sign in to see full entry.

Sigh…wait till next year.

The mighty Tigers, picked to win the AL Central and make a serious run at a World Series title, struck out – and how. Runner-up would have been a little disappointing. Dead last was totally unexpected. And, to make it worse, the inescapable conclusion is that the organization shot itself in the foot... Sign in to see full entry.

It’s crunch time in MLB

The list of playoff contenders has been reduced to a double handful, five in each league. Two races remain to be determined in the NL. The Chicago Cubs clinched the NL Central two weeks ago, and the Los Angeles Dodgers did the same in the NL West this week. Still up for grabs are the NL East and the... Sign in to see full entry.

Wait till next…

ummmm, ahhhh, let’s say next Sunday, the last scheduled day of the 2008 MLB season. Yes, I know the Detroit Tigers were officially eliminated from any possibility of a playoff birth way back on Monday. And I know they have dropped three out of four games since then for a not quite stellar 1-8 record... Sign in to see full entry.

Purple Clad Pirates Do It Again!

It’s week one of the 2008 NFL season, but the biggest news in football is the second straight upset of a Top 25 college football team by lightly regarded East Carolina. Last week ECU stunned the collegiate ranks with a dramatic come from behind upset of then 15th ranked Virginia Tech. Some of that... Sign in to see full entry.

It’s magic time in Major League Baseball

Magic number time, that is. For those uninitiated into this particular baseball statistic, the magic number equals the number of games a first place team would need to win its division if the second place team were to win all of its remaining games. An example of how this works is the... Sign in to see full entry.
