Good Heavens! What a day. Thank God for Adults, That's About All I Can Say

Today's agenda was set by the children's mother. Up by ten o'clock, out to Grandma's by eleven-thirty to meet her, drive to Iowa City for a graduation party, and back home again. My girls made it up and gone in time, mostly, and I had a sudden fear after they had been gone a half hour: What if they... Sign in to see full entry.

The Washing Machine is Fixed, YIPPEE, Yay and WOOO-Hoo!

So many of you have left nice, concerned comments that I want to update everyone on my day. I met the Maytag Repairman at two o'clock. At 67.50 per fifteen minutes I was worried. It was done in fifteen minutes. With the addition of two new belts, the total was less than 150.00. Now I feel grateful... Sign in to see full entry.

Here's How Wonderful My Life is...

I'm sitting in the kitchen after eating a three day-old one half sub sandwich, waiting for my 15 year-old to emerge from her bedroom so I can take her to work. The washing machine is burst, after 23 years of faithful service. Women! Can't live with 'em, can't haul 'em to the dump. On Wednesday I got... Sign in to see full entry.

Catchy! Might be worth a few million bucks for our district!

I always hesitate to write anything in this space, I don't know why. Yuri just left and we had a problem with the kids that leave the building and then go back inside to do gym make-up, office detention, or after school projects. Missael was so proud that he received a comment from an Australian.... Sign in to see full entry.

He rolled on the ground at least three times. I was very proud.

Yay! We finally won a soccer match! It was the 7:00 game last night. We won four to two. After losing the first three games (Monday and Wednesday), we are victorious at last, and I believe we have found our stride. The coaches (Yuri and her fiance) are riding high and counting on more victories. I... Sign in to see full entry.

Yes, Never-Go-Anywhere Chel Who Got a Job At McDonald's Has a Beau.

After school I went home to check on the girls' progress. Terrible, shocking news. Chel has a boyfriend! Yes, never-go-anywhere Chel, who got a job at McDonald's a few weeks back has a beau. I told her everything a dad can, listened, threatened and warned. Now I'm just going to hope for the best,... Sign in to see full entry.

All students can learn, all students want to be good, all students can be!

My Pre-Algebra class -- my first ever -- has reached the end of the school year. They have done so well, that it makes me take pause to consider how we composed this class. These thirty students, all 8th graders, half Anglos who flunked 7th grade math and half ESL students who never had any advanced... Sign in to see full entry.

The Brightest and Best Day of the Year, So Far!

Today is Sunday, my second day in charge of guarding the house while everyone is away. That means that for the first weekend all year I have actually gotten some rest. Already today I've had two naps on the couch. Now, my lunch and dinner were provided by Subway. I was taught by my 16 year-old, if... Sign in to see full entry.

Oh What a Beautiful Morning, Oh What a Beautiful Day!

I hit the wall. During the week I try for 29 or 30 hours of sleep between Monday night and Friday morning. This week I got less than 20. It makes things less fun. When I get thirty hours of sleep during the week I go ahead and stay up all night on Fridays. I sleep from maybe 5:00 AM to ten, then... Sign in to see full entry.

Direct threats were made

My Gosh! I am done in. This was not the great week of crisis intervention and heroism. It was just another week out of 36, plodding through what might be called an experimental, albeit somewhat comprehensive alternative education setting. We had some fighting, or the beginnings of fighting. One... Sign in to see full entry.
