Make it better

Almost all photos need some fixing. I recently took this photo of my grandson trying on his winter coat and hat. It was a cute shot, but as with a lot of snapshots, there was too much background and the subject wasn't centered. To correct these problems, I first cropped the photo to bring the little... Improvements through editing

I remember my uncle had a darkroom in his basement where he had enlargers, chemicals and all the old-timey equipment needed to delelop, print and edit photos. It was a dedicated room and lots of equipment the casual photographer just didn't have access to. Now, in the digital age, we all have acess... Sign in to see full entry.

Work every angle

Angles in photography figure in to almost every aspect of the shot. Some are easy to control, use a zoom lens to eliminate distracting backgrounds as I have done here. The tractor appears to be isolated in a field far removed in the country. Had I not zoomed in, you would see my house, driveway and... Sign in to see full entry.

Photos never wait

I've seen this photo for the last few days, when I move the sprinkler, the clover has water drops that catch the sun. Only they don't last very long or sometimes there is no sun so today when I moved the sprinkler I came back in, got my camera and now I have the photo. Sign in to see full entry.

Make your own cards

Greeting cards with a personal touch are fun to do and mean so much more. My son recently bought his old race bike back and is going to race the over 30 class after he turns that magic age this month. So for his card I used these photos. I like to use Printmaster Platinum, the older version where... Sign in to see full entry.

Your very own time capsule

Photos are certainly records. A moment in time is captured but putting these moments in a sequence later on is revealing. Here is a photo of my youngest son when he was hours old. Now, skip ahead nearly thiry years and his son, not even an hour old. A few month later, the little guy is changing... Sign in to see full entry.

Anticipate the action

Sports have focal points where the opportunity for action shots will be greater. Home plate, goal lines or starting gates are places where the action is usually more concentrated and likely to be more exciting. However, the faster shutter speeds needed to capture sports can sometimes freeze the... Sign in to see full entry.

Chill out!

Most of you are experiencing hot weather. Somehow, here in the Pacific Northwest, we have escaped the heat but now that it is warming up to the 80s even we are reminded that summer can be hot. So I offer this photo as a reminder that there are four seasons and this is why my truck doesn't have air... Sign in to see full entry.

Can't see the forest for the trees?

Sometimes we get so carried away with vistas of cloud swept mountains we don't see the little details hidden in the forest. The tips of tree branches in the spring pop with a fresh green power. Every tree has them but you have to look closely. It also helps to illuminate them with a fill flash when... Sign in to see full entry.

A photo punchline

Sometimes something suggests a joke. I was walking out the front door the other day when I noticed wires sticking out of the siding on our yet to be finished re-model. I thought I should take a picture of it and do this with it... You might be a Redneck if your doorbell is two wahrs stickin' outn'... Sign in to see full entry.
