Scarier than Haloween...

This 4th of July provided us with a spectacular show, that is if a disaster can be considered spectacular. We were on our way to Silverwood Theme Park in nearby Idaho when we go a call that the mountain across the road from our house was on fire. We turned around and headed home to gather our... Sunsets and Moon

It's not often one sees a sunset and a crescent moon all at once. It is a scene that begs for a camera, yet it is frustrating to capture. I used a tripod since I had to use my zoom lens and daylight was fading. Here is the scene, "raw" much as the eye sees it. But what the eye takes in, a photo... Sign in to see full entry.

Flash and photo editing

Sometimes, the picture one wants isn’t the one that can be taken. The other morning, our cats were on the bathroom counter side by side. The dilemma was, whether to use the portrait or landscape orientation. While portrait offered the best framing option, an odd thing happens when you use a flash,... Sign in to see full entry.

Get close

Find the macro focus point on your camera, then use it! This African Violet begged to have it's picture taken, those droplet like textures on the leaves aren't visible from across the room. Then I realized a slightly different angle offered a different view of the center of the flower. So I got even... Sign in to see full entry.

Crystal clear...maybe

Photographers constantly battle focus. After all, without a crisp focus, photos like this can't highlight the detail that caught the eye in the first place. Other times, maybe a hint of soft focus grabs the feeling better. Here, the fog was the main wintery feeling, nearly obscuring the mountain in... Sign in to see full entry.

Leaf them lie

As I was getting ready to rake leaves, I noticed quite a variation in the coloration and patterns on the leaves. Up close the color transformations are caught in mid turn. So now we know that like snowflakes, no two leaves are the same. But much like snowflakes, their mixtures do blend to form a... Sign in to see full entry.

Old fashioned elegance and a silly joke

Inside the mansion proved lavish. It was after I was posting these on facebook that I came up with the captions. Don't worry if you don't get it. Unless you listened to Firesign Theater's "The Adventures of Nick Danger, Third Eye" you wont' have a clue. Are those your cues? Why yes they are. Then... Sign in to see full entry.

Tell a story

Photos are well worth a thousand words and in this day of digital media, one can just snap away, then cherry pick the shots worth keeping later on. When my son got married, they chose to have the ceremony on the grounds of the bed and breakfast they were staying in. The gazeebo seemed like the ideal... Sign in to see full entry.

Details

Of course it's the touches that make any home a standout. Moreso for historical homes. This one featured stained glass windows and beautiful wood inlay on the floors. Sign in to see full entry.

Historically speaking

My son and his bride chose this historical mansion/bed & breakfast as the venue for their wedding. I never knew it existed, but then most towns have historical districts. Spokane has an abundance of cool old houses and this is one of the better ones available for public use. I don't know when it was... Sign in to see full entry.
