On August 16 th 1936, Franco stated to the world’s press “ I will never bomb Madrid. There live innocents. ” But during the bombing of Barcelona in 1937/38, leaflets were showered over the city stating, “ We will bomb you every three hours, until you surrender. Surrender, or we destroy you all! Generalissimo Franco.” An unmistakable message that there was henceforth to be a return to the status quo ante: a reversion in modern form to the exterminatory tactics of the Hundred Years War.
