"Practical Zionism"

In 1913, an American Jewish woman, Henrietta Szold, sent two nurses to Jerusalem through the just-formed Hadassah Organization. This combination of action and ideology, a concept called "practical Zionism" is still prevalent today. According to Nancy Falchuk, current President of Hadassah, "from the foundation of Hadassah (in 1912) to Israeli independence (in 1948), a group of Jewish housewives, many without telephones in their homes, built a medical infrastructure and much of the education...
