More REMEDIES from Dr. Gott

The last blog about Vick's VapoRub was such a hit, I am going to share another list of favorite home remedies: Soap for Nocturnal Leg Cramps: Simply place a bar of soap, unwrapped, under the bottom sheet of your bed near your legs. This remedy takes effect immediately. Castor Oil for Arthritis: Rub a small amount of castor oil into the affected joint or joints, morning and night. May take effect immediately, or full results may not be seen for up to four days. Grape Juice an Certo for Arthritis:... Sign in to see full entry.

Do YOU Use Vicks Vaporub?

Maybe you SHOULD! To follow through on one of Dr. Gott’s home remedy columns, here is a story one patient related about Vicks VapoRub. Dear Dr. Gott, I have one more footnote to add about the use of Vicks VapoRub. I use Vicks for fungus on my toenails, jock itch, insect bites, small cuts, insect repellent (yes it works for me), etc. But for more than 20 years, I had a large wart on the end of my right index finger. It was about the size of three or four match heads placed side by side. I am... Sign in to see full entry.

Soap in Your Bed

My neurologist at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Dr. Pahwa, chuckled as he read through my poem. As a Christmas gift, I had just given him a bar of Ivory Soap, simply wrapped in a piece of computer paper listing a lot of home remedies. Completing the list was a poem about one of "the remedies" in particular. It had been written by one of his favorite patients, none other than yours truly! What better gift to give someone who probably had everything? He asked me if "the remedy" worked... Sign in to see full entry.

Ouch, I Felt That!!

"Ouch, I can feel that!" I told the dermatologist, as he stitched up the 3" incision he made to remove a mole from where the sun don't shine. I was not to feel a thing, but each little prick of the needle I DID feel. The local was wearing off! He asked me if I felt anything, after I must have twitched, and when I told him it felt like when I got a bikini wax and she used tweezers to pluck out the hairs the wax missed. "THAT part of the bikini wax hurt like hell! Just like now!" He just said,... Sign in to see full entry.

What an amount!

If anyone has Parkinson's disease, they'll tell you sooner than later, about how much their medication costs. I just got my 2007 year's summary from Social Security (SS) that told just how much was paid for just my prescription drugs. It was $14,651.48! That doesn't include other medical expenses, such as labs and office calls or the slug of vitamin supplements I take daily. Today I went to pick up a refill for a new drug I started just last fall. I had been in a drug study for this new drug and... Sign in to see full entry.

On Getting Older. . .

I've been an AARP member since I turned the big 5-0. That qualified me for discounts for car rentals and hotel discounts. I also get their publications, which have been helpful to one already on Medicare because of the Parkinson's. This morning, I slept in until 10:00. Senior-hood comes early to people with Parkinson's. I had been up from 4-7:00 a.m. cleaning the kitchen and tending to other tasks left undone since the day before. I just went back to bed to catch up on the hours I had missed. In... Handicapped Should Never Travel Solo (Overseas)

I've been back for a month or more and I'd better get some thoughts recorded before the dementia eats up my memories! My flight out of KC was delayed 5 hours because of the tornado warnings. The ticket agent assured me he could reschedule me all the way to Istanbul. My luggage got sent ahead due to other delays. I got to Dulles in DC and that international plane was packed full. After fifteen minutes taxiing to our spot on the runway, the captain explained there was an electrical problem. They... Sign in to see full entry.

I'm Leavin' on a Jet Plane...

Two days left before I leave. I'm going on a journey with my brothers and sisters; destination Istanbul, where we will tour for four days, and then Cruise for seven days aboard a Yacht, stopping at the islands between Turkey and Athens, where we will take many excursion trips. My agenda today is keep two doctor appointments, make last minute calls (not personal) and review international airport laws to be sure I don't get something confiscated. I learned on my last trip to buy several little... Sign in to see full entry.

Brain Augmentation

The following cartoon strip is from "Pearls Before Swine", October 6th, 2007. Brain augmentation - I wonder if they use pigs brains for that? In 1997, my husband, Jay, and I traveled to Chicago for a Parkinson's disease symposium. Researchers had just begun a study examining the implantation of pig brain cells into the brains of people with Parkinson's. DBS (Deep Brain Surgery) was still very experimental and just vaguely known about. There was a Q&A session and one older lady asked the esteemed... Sign in to see full entry.
