Once you get caught up in the system

it is very difficult to get out. There is so much required and no one works together. For one court, my friend who is in jail has to get into treatment. He was scheduled to go into treatment but he's now in jail. So he will lose his place and have to start all over again. He didn't go to jail... Sign in to see full entry.

The Dangers of Helping the Homeless

The police raided the house of a friend of mine. She has a two year old son and he had to get a toxology screen. She also takes in people. We were conversing last week of people that we don't trust and I told her about a man that I thought was creepy. I had conversations with him and he was polite,... Sign in to see full entry.

A Homeless Shelter

The typical shelter has no privacy, no place to be during the day. There is no guarantee that if you stay in it one day you can stay the next. One problem I've discovered is that some homeless people have a lot of stuff and can accumulate even more. When you are afraid of loosing everything you hang... Sign in to see full entry.

How big should it be? A homeless shelter.

I think I should limit the shelter to a group home. I can buy a 5 or 6 bedroom house for $200, 000. If we added a smoking porch then we'd have enough space for people to sit. We could design small bedrooms. The size of a single bed with enough room to pull out drawers. We could design platform beds... Sign in to see full entry.

The next phase.

Last night I couldn't sleep, so I looked at real estate. I wanted to find a property for making into a homeless shelter. I am a visual person and I wanted to have an idea of what is available so that I could know how to make the shelter. But I think instead I should create a shelter based on my... Crossing the line

Our house has become the homeless shelter for whoever knows about us. This morning I went into the garage to get my car and go to my doctor's appointment and found it in pieces. I also found a couple sleeping on the coach that I'd never met. You'd have a hard time associating this middle class... Sign in to see full entry.

Happiness

for Sam is doing what he loves--making cabinets. He also loves working on cars, plumbing, fixing anything. He is one of those workers who loses all sense of time when he's busy working. When he stops working and thinks is when he gets into trouble. His life is a mess and he knows it. As long as he's... Sign in to see full entry.

This first week after our announcement

Sam and Julie have been working very hard. They get up early and work all day. Julie is getting treatment lined up. She genuinely wants to be able to come back here. Sam is fixing my car, cleaning the garage, the yard, and working on finishing things he has started. He doesn't want to go to... Sign in to see full entry.

After making our announcement

that we are kicking out Sam and Julie they have responded in various ways. At first they were hurt and angry. Now Julie is doing what she can to get in a inpatient hospital. My husband went with Julie to settle her account at her outpatient treatment, they gave her a certificate and didn't demand... Sign in to see full entry.

I had a long conversation about our decision.

He was questioning why we did it. He thought that we were doing it for ourselves. The truth is that having Sam and Julie live with us has been relatively easy and pleasant. The problem as we see it is that it is too easy to get comfortable and resist doing anything for oneself. We are allowing them... Sign in to see full entry.
