Group Process

The major means of change for people with chemical dependency is groups. It helps if there are more people in recovery than are still using. Leaders can only do so much the group members are the most influential in the group. We finally have two people who really want to get off chemicals and get a... Sign in to see full entry.

Being Forced to Change

My husband and I made it very clear that our two house guests who aren't doing well would have to get into treatment by June 1 or they would be kicked out of the house. We also told them if they didn't cooperate with treatment they would be kicked out. We have seen little progress in these two. We... Sign in to see full entry.

Our new resident

We have a new resident with a sense of humor. He is very easy to have around and we are always laughing when he's around. My serious daughter is even learning to laugh and tease. He wasn't homeless in the convention sense. He was going to be living in his car because his Dad moved out of town and he... Sign in to see full entry.

Up and Down

Wednesday night was really tense. We had a family meeting and among other things talked about Julie and Sam moving downstairs. They didn't want to do it. They started to argue and we had to stop it and tell them that I would be talking to each one individually. Thursday was very peaceful and we were... Sign in to see full entry.

Consequences

We have two addicts living wih us who are still using. They are reluctantly getting into treatment. We have let them stay two long. We fell in love with them and now will have to kick them out if they don't shape up. I know what it's like to see a person actively working a program as they say and... Sign in to see full entry.

Drug Addicts

It's hard for me to believe that most of my friends are drug addicts and former drug addicts. The only drug I took as a teenager in the sixties was to smoke a bit of marijuana. Most of the time I passed it up and drank instead. I went to seminary when I was forty and spent all my time for the next... Sign in to see full entry.

Instant Change

I think that change is usually gradual. However, there are times when a person can change instantly. Barry has done that. He has gone from someone who talked good, but then went out and used drugs and didn't deal with life to a person who walks the talk as they say. The change was overnight. He... A Brother's Opinion

Sam's brother Barry thinks that his brother and Julie are not doing well--which I already know. He also thinks that they treat us with disrespect and aren't getting anywhere. I think Julie has to get herself into inpatient treatment and Sam needs to get into treatment and get mental health treatment... Sign in to see full entry.

I have a new challenge.

There is a girl who is suffering from both mental illness and drug addiction. She doesn't live anywhere but stays in tents and sleeps wherever she ends up at night. I have been trying to keep her at my house until she gets hooked up with a case manager from the local mental health center. They have... Sign in to see full entry.

It is such a joy to have someone who wants to change.

Barry who last year avoided probation and got two extra drug charges, now is eager to do everything right. He wants to succeed at drug court and he wants to stay clean. He is willing to go to any length to succeed. It is such a surprise. I thought he was going to have to go to prison before he... Sign in to see full entry.
