A response to TAPS comment

TAPS, I bow to your wisdom in many things, but this time, I have to disagree. There are people who make it their whole work to control what other people think. They arrange juries, garner votes, and sell anything that can be sold. Every day, casually, we choose our words to create an impression, or guide belief in a direction we prefer. We leave out, we lie, we embroider, we get... creative. Sometimes we only mean to entertain, to make a story better... Other times, it is to get someone else... Sign in to see full entry.

How would you feel in a world where everyone defined Christianity

by the Inquisition, the forced conversion of tribal peoples in times and places of conquest, and the ethics of the Borgia Popes, and others no less venal? Or by the rules and orders of extremist sects that have always been part of the Christian landscape? Or where everyone defined dark-skinned Africans by the Mau-Mau? Or all African Americans by the stereotypic pimped-out pimp? Or all South Americans as drug-lords and their minions? Discrimination. Every living creature has to learn to... So, many are singing and dancing in the streets

their arms and voices uplifted in celebration of "justice done" which is another term for vengeance. I find I cannot dance or sing about the death of Bin Laden: I feel a weary kind of relief that he at last is out of the picture as an active nexus of creative force turned to destruction as its artform. But I also can't help but wish he had been taken alive. Alive, to face the judgment of law, of the people he has injured, to have his nose rubbed in himself... To spend years alive in prison...... If you can't get it right, just shut up...

Okay, here they go again... partisan politickers holding the economic well-being of the People hostage over idealogical differences, though 'well-being' may be an over optimistic term... Still, it is heartening to see that the 'journalists' of the day are still getting their exercise, repeating and rerunning and basically milking the situation for every penny--because it is about the pennies--they can get. Okay, that's a lie. I am fed up with the idea that this kind of crisis is the only thing... Sign in to see full entry.

Love’s Not Always Pink

Love’s not always pink-- It’s what you feel and live not what you think. Sometimes it’s what you give or are allowed to take or nothing you can have for someone else’s sake. Love’s not always song-- its voice not always heard or clear and strong. Sometimes it’s just absurd and makes no kind of sense Or it speaks without a word, has neither rhyme nor tense. Love’s not always glee-- It has its moods and swings and doesn’t see. Sometimes imaginings turn into fear and doubt or expectation clings to... Sign in to see full entry.

If you are celebrating thnkfulness today

Don't forget to raise an appreciative glass to the men and women overseas particularly those in the war zones that have put their lives between us and those who would be thankful to see us dead. That's a truth that transcends politics or philosophy, prejudice or opinion. Sign in to see full entry.

Love Pats?

Okay, so a noisy percentage of everyone is complaining about having to either display their goodies to airport security e-ray vision... or have those unsmiling, unfriendly security hands all over their person... How... undignified! How... unpleasant! Well... I just have to wonder, has anyone considered the plight of the airport security employee? Imagine what they have to look at, by the hundreds, day after day! Imagine what they have to touch, likewise? By the hundreds! Day after day! Maybe... Sign in to see full entry.

Speaking of the Haves and Have-nots...

as our TAPS recently did... In Washington State, we get to vote on a question regarding the application of a new tax to be levied against the richest of the state's population. It amounts, as many have pointed out, to a state income tax, and in 2 years, could be adapted to apply to everyone in the state. We already have nearly the highest sales tax in the nation, and a state income tax has been rejected time and again, despite the great regressive unfairness of the sales tax which gets worse... A reading theme today

As I spent some time today wandering the blogscape in territory never or seldom or not recently explored, I found myself following a thread of thought. The greatest failing of this grand experiment, the United States of America, is that we have ceased to learn, we have been voluntarily sliding, like the kids who don't want to be called on, to the back of the class. Or like the kids who think they know enough, and don't need to pay attention to where the rest of the class is going. Or like the... Sign in to see full entry.
