I agree with adnohr - I think dogs are extremely perceptive in ways we don't fully understand. But of course dogs also exhibit great differences in personality and intelligence, and yes, there are dogs that are not likely to ever comprehend even the rudiments of Relativity Theory, LOL...

I did look over at him but his back was to me, as he was gazing outside.

All the same, I agree, dogs pick up on things we don't realize they can.

Personally? I believe our dogs know and understand more than we (or dog experts) give them credit for. Body language that we humans have forgotten how to read, I guess it is. I bet you looked over at Phoenix a couple of times while you were writing...he probably felt that - you were somehow giving him a message...not all of it good (i.e. describing his being slow to respond). His coming to you was a "but we love each other anyway, right?" statement. Reassuring, and looking for reassurance.
