Vacation lag...

Here it is Tuesday after the Friday I got home... And I am still all sleepy halfway through the day, and mostly only motivated to be busy here at the keyboard in front of the TV, though it is an unexpectedly pretty day outside. It's a fine thing to sleep full-length in my own bed, with my cats keeping my feet warm (and a little crushed) instead of on an uncomfortable, unfamiliar bed in a motel, or in one variation or anothern of a slightly bent position in the front of my pick-up. It's a... Sign in to see full entry.

My Dad, The Gold Watch and Everything

My dad, Dr Kenneth Franklin, was an astronomer. A radio astronomer, in fact. One of my very earliest memories--I must have been around 3--is of waiting in the car (big old thing with no square corners, an a huge back seat, and lots of grey) while he walked out into a wide grassy field to check his radio antenna. It looked like a telephone wire strung along several shortish poles. My mother stood outside the car watching with some anxiety. Before he went out into the field, they had argued some... Got an interesting email from a man in Holland

No, it did not ask me to help him collect several million dollars for which I would receive a million just for sending my bank info... This is someone who contacted me some months ago regarding a watch made by Helbros that used a time system for use on the moon. My dad created the time system, mostly just for fun, and Helbros made the watch for it, and offered it in the Neimann Marcus Christmas Catalog in the late 70s. He has found the watch offered on ebay, and sent me a link. Once I tracked it... Sign in to see full entry.

I didn't see my Mom...

She has been feeling so poorly, in constant pain, and was just not up for a visit. I couldn't get in touch with her all that day I was driving up that way, and dawdled in the area, but didn't hear anything back until the next morning when I was well into Wyoming. My sister called then, and let me know Mom had been at the doctor. She has lost her sense of balance, and falls sometimes. She has fallen several times in the past couple of months, and is in constant pain. But like Some People We Know,... Sign in to see full entry.

Tomorrow I head home...

Charlie and I will meet again after his morning class, have lunch at a great little place called The Peak Grill, and then I will be on my way. Adjustment time... going solo again. In the morning, I'll get in touch with my mom who lives north of here about 150 miles and see if she wants me to come by, or not. She has been having a rough time with her health, and of course it has been a hard year for her since my dad died. She moved last March, too--always a big stress. I'm never sure if my... Long Haul, Short Break...

Charlie is delighted to be back in Colorado Springs, and is moving his gear into his dorm room even now, as I sit in a (relatively) posh motel, one that has wifi, and all the necessaries... I'll be here a couple of nights, until he gets all his moving and shopping accomplished. His classes start Tuesday. (Clever lad, none of his classes meet on Monday!) I'll give the travel news in my Travelblogue--this is about just being plumb wore out from driving and car-camping, which is to say, sleeping... Sign in to see full entry.

Last day... or so

I've been blogging intensely this past month, trying to see if I can make Blogit break even. Gonna get close this month, I think... But what a lot of energy goes into making $20! Good thing this is so much more rewarding in so many other ways! Anyway, tomorrow we are heading out, Charlie and me, for Colorado. We haven't hardly begun packing, and don't know what route we are taking yet. The only fer-sher is that we need to have him at his school in time for classes Aug 25th. We need to get a... Urgo

About 3 weeks ago, our Urgo was up on the roof when Davy came bounding out in the yard and attacked his rope rat, a 20-inch long rat shapped thing wrapped in sisal rope and strung up on the run line. Davy attacks this thing with great vigor and much snarly noise. Urgo leaped over the roof wide-eyed startled, to disappear. I think that was the moment that Davy became too much for him. When Davy arrived, he was about the same size as Urgo. Over the course of 3 months he is now about 4 times Urgo's... Sign in to see full entry.

I know he'll be back!

Samantha posted this morning about the unhappy anticipation of watching her daughter, her pal, head out to college. http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/Blog.aspx/sam15355536/ I know the feeling! I sent my youngest, Charlie, off to college last year, and it was I who insisted he get far from the familiar ground and routines of home. He was reluctant to leave the area he grew up in, the one he knows best, his good friends and a good bus system. (He is a kid who never much has wanted the independence and... Sign in to see full entry.

Well, then... Enough of the art festival!

Yes, I'm home already and not planning to go back tomorrow. For one thing, I am quite sunburnt enough! I haven't been this red in years! And of course, it has to be in a funny-looking pattern because of the particular blouse I was wearing, and how badly I need a haircut. For another, it was almost no fun at all, sharing the space with the jewelry artist who invited me. Do you know folks who are so sure of their own way being the best of all possible ways that they never stop to consider or to... Sign in to see full entry.
