Nonplussed...

Welcome to the Ciel Show. Formerly The Roving Eye blog, in 'art and photography' this is now acknowledged for the direction it was heading, and has become officially a 'journal' blog. I'd like to say it is like having friends over for tea... but as I will probably do most of the talking, and some will wander into this salon and never even say hello, it is probably more like a small stage in a minor hall. There is a chair-- possibly TAPS will give me that one she no longer needs-- and a... Sign in to see full entry.

...and no bird sang...

The height of summer is so quiet here. There is a calm all day as the sun shines down, drying the grass to brown and parching the potted plants on the patio. The land bakes in direct light, and the shade is cooler, but just as dry. Contrary to popular delusion, it does not rain all the time in the Northwest. It rains all winter, and often well into spring. Sometimes the rains begin in earnest as early as Labor Day. In 30 years out here, I have seen them come that early, and I've seen them hold... New Movie1 This Ghengis Khan ain't Tony Curtis!

We went to see MONGOL last night. It's a foreign film made on location in Mongolia and Khazakstan, with Mongolian, Chinese, Japanese and other Asian film-makers. To begin with, the cinemetography is spectacular, and does justice to the vast landscapes and skies. The battle scenes are grimly artistic, and the entire production is so visually and culturally authentic, it is a pure pleasure. The actors are real, too. Being (to most of us, probably) mostly unfamiliar names and faces, and the acting... Sign in to see full entry.

Now, whose fault is this?

Seems our Davy dog, pup that he is, chewed apart the strap of the sitter's backpack. The sitter, a 23-yr old young man, is not too happy about that... but is it his own fault for both leaving the pack where the pup could get to it, and for not noticing that it was happening? Takes a while to chew through a strap... I am suddenly reminded of a T-shirt my son had for a while that said on it: Some days its just not worth chewing through the leather straps in the morning. His sister gave it to him,... Sign in to see full entry.

Called the dog sitter today...

He has been dealing with Davy since Friday morning, and sounds like he is hanging in there, though Davy is clearly being a brat and driving him a bit nuts! I tried to give him encouragement to play the pup harder (Davy loves to wrestle snarlingly with this big rope rat--especially when someone is hanging onto the other end of it, keeping it lively.) And to feel okay about time outs as required. This pup needs to get his exercise, but he also needs to learn that nipping and pouncing playfully is... Sign in to see full entry.

Teaching Davy his place...

Davy is getting the message about where to be when, for instance, I sit down in the living room for a meal in front of the tv. He was jumping up, wanting my attention, wanting to be on the couch, wanting a hand-out... He'd get all exuberant and start with the teeth and paws (and claws). Now, when I sit down, I direct him to the place next to the couch and give him a rawhide chew-treat and he stays content with that while I eat my chew treats. If he doesn't calm down, if teeth keep connecting... Sign in to see full entry.

Davy, Down! Dog people... trainers... This one is for you:

How would you teach a puppy to keep his sharp little teeth off human skin... and pants cuffs...? One book I have says that some trainings are not going to be absorbed until at least 4 months of age, and our Davy is just coming up on 10 weeks. This is a thing he does when he is excited-- a play behavior, and a herding behavior. Is the goal here to teach him to contain his excitement? Is that how I should be looking at it? Do we whisk him off to a time-out with every playful snap and nip? Cesare... Sign in to see full entry.

Shots for puppy...

This is the day! He gets his boosters today, and that means--Freedom! Now he will be safe to visit other dogs, and I can take him to the parks and on longer walks and places other dogs walk... This means I will not be, perforce, at home, and our walkies not restricted to our yard and long driveway. Last week I observed the eruption and growth of a cluster of fungi in the yard near the line where he can run up and down. He found them quite, quite interesting, and so I cordoned them off to see... Davy wakes up so happy!

He is just purely delighted to go bounding into the world each day, to greet each of us with huge grins, merry enthusiasm, invitations to play... So, we have to clean up the wet, nasty newspapers from the floor, and hustle him out for his first official walk of the day... We have to delay our breakfasts to play a while, and curb the happy puppy teeth from nipping our hands and heels... We have to turn away when he jumps up on us... We have to trade actual toys for plastic bags, odd socks, shoes,... Sign in to see full entry.
