Away from the kitchen

Tom and I just returned from our honeymoon at a medieval reinactment held in the Arizona desert. After a week of war food (which was very tasty and filling but can wreak havoc on your digestive system) I am thrilled to be back in the kitchen. Granted, thr fridge was bare (I let things run out... Food on the Move

We are about to leave on the 12 day oddessy that is The Estrella War. This means we will be in the van three days out and three days back and six days camping. And although there will be plenty to eat at the war, the cuisine to and from often leaves alot to be desired. You can only eat so much... Sign in to see full entry.

The Feast of St. Andrews

My wedding day was special for many reasons. It was my marriage. It was my first time as a herald and I did not have to cook. I was treated to the most wonderful feast that a bride could ask for. My dear friend Sandi Rust documented and recreated these medieval period dishes for our wedding and she... Sign in to see full entry.

Onion Juice

I was wandering through the store this morning trying to find something to make for breakfast after running a paper route all night when I happened upon a bottle of cloudy white juice... onion juice. Now I love onions so the idea of using onion juice seemed rather foreign to me but my curiosity was... Sign in to see full entry.

A few interesting ideas

I get several cook's emails a day and these gems were a part of seveal of these mailings. I added a few of them to my journal. I hope you find them helpful as well. * Use a large fork to mix ingredients if your mixer is broken. * Use the microwave to quickly heat small amounts of liquids or to melt... Gathering Kitchen Gems

So I have decided to open my blog to you. If you have... Sign in to see full entry.

Simple Foods

As much as I enjoy being in the kitchen there are some times when all I really want is something quick, hot and satisfying. Most of the time that ends up being food that is not "gourmet or foodie". It often ends up being something I ate as a child or a dish that is well worn with time like the... Sign in to see full entry.

Gone Bananas

Tom and I were checking out a new "bargain grocery store" that just opened in town this morning and, although most of their prices were in line with everyone else, their marked down items were a gold mine. I am used to dealing with meat and produce that is "near date" so I went a little crazy and,... Sign in to see full entry.

A Cook's Journal

After finding Mike's kitchen journal yesterday I got to thinking about keeping one for myself. I had never really thought about it but so much of what I learned from him as a chef came not from what he learned in college but rather what he experienced in his own kitchen. There is so much here...... Sign in to see full entry.

My Goofed Up Day

I have walked out of the kitchen in a huff with a bruise on my forehead, a burned hand and a cut finger. There are just some days, no matter how hungry you are, that you just should not go into the kitchen. Before he left for work I promised Tom I would make some muffins. It is rainy and cold and...
