The ACC has eight bowl teams.

As impressive as that sounds for a 12-team conference, it really isn’t such a big deal. Two of those teams have less than impressive 6-6 records. At the start of the football season there were 32 bowl match-ups available for 119 Division 1A teams. That meant that over half of the teams would “win” a... Sign in to see full entry.

Carolina 94, High Point 65

It sounds like a laugher, a blowout. I guess it was. Roy Williams used all of his bench except for a couple of injured players. But High Point gave both Cincinnati and Maryland fits earlier in the season. They are expected to give a very good Winthrop team some competition in the Big South... Sign in to see full entry.

UCLA #1?

Yeah, until they lose. That could be as soon as Saturday when the Bruins have to face #6 Texas A&M. I haven’t looked at their schedule beyond tomorrow’s match-up for the rest of the month, but the way this season has been going, it doesn’t necessarily take a highly rated team to knock off one of the... Are the UNC Tar Heels Overrated?

Probably not. But it sure has looked like it in the first half of each of North Carolina’s NIT Season Tip-off games. Sacred Heart gave them half a game before being blown out 103-81 a week ago Tuesday. Two days later the Winthrop Eagles led by as many as 12 points before falling to one of UNC’s... Tar Heel Coaching Change

Butch Davis is the new head football coach of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels effective the end of the current season. Davis reportedly will make two million per year, about as much per season as outgoing coach John Bunting made over his head-coaching career. There are reasons why Davis... Sign in to see full entry.

Why is Rutgers only ranked #7?

Better yet, why were they only ranked #15 before knocking off 3 rd ranked Louisville on Thursday? The validity of the BCS system, as well as the polls, has to come into question again when an undefeated team couldn’t crack any of the top 10s until they pulled off an upset that may not have been such... The Polls have spoken. Florida is a repeat NCAA Champion.

Uhhhh…not so fast. The Gators, as defending champs with a nearly intact team from last year, are the obvious choice. The AP, the Coaches, and all the other preseason poll I’ve seen have gone with the obvious choice. But my money is on the North Carolina Tar Heels. Or it would be if I was a betting... Bobcats Show Promise

They dropped an overtime game to the Celtics tonight -- a game I slept through -- so I can’t give you any details. But I did get to see their win over the Cavaliers. I’ve been a Detroit Pistons fan ever since the franchise moved from Fort Wayne. I’m not about to drop a near lifelong allegiance to... Sign in to see full entry.

The Tigers came up three wins short.

It’s been almost two weeks since my Detroit Tigers failed to take the last giant step to World Series Champs. I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed. But the pain wasn’t as great as you might think. Detroit played miserably over the last 50 games of the regular season, dropping 31 games. They squandered... Sign in to see full entry.

Tigers 8, Oakland 5

Detroit now has a 2-zip lead on the A’s as they had back to Motown for game three. There is no lock on the pennant yet. The Tigers have been better on the road than at home all season. And that’s about all I’ve got to say about the situation. As much as I love sports, I’m going to put this blog on... Sign in to see full entry.

Four in a row!

Detroit beat Oakland 5-1 tonight to take a 1-0 advantage in the ALCS. It’s hard to believe that this is the same team that lost five in a row at the end of the season and got slaughtered by the Yankees in their first playoff game. I don’t expect them to take the A’s in four straight, but anything... Sign in to see full entry.

Buck O'Neil

It saddened me to learn of the passing of Buck O’Neil last week. What disturbed me even more was the report that Buck had been heartbroken by the news that he had missed induction into the Hall of Fame by a single vote. It boggles the mind that John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil wasn’t given his rightful... Sign in to see full entry.

Wild Card Fever

I’ve got it for the first time since they instituted the damned thing. It’s not because I’ve changed my mind about it being a terrible idea in the first place. It’s because my beloved Tigers are it. That, and the fact that they beat the Yankees to advance to a best of seven series with Oakland,... Sign in to see full entry.

8-3, 6-0, 4-3

Those are the scores of the last three games in the Tigers vs. Yankees series. And they were all in favor of Detroit. Yup. My Tigers blew the first game in New York 4-8. Before that game, few outside of the Tiger faithful gave Detroit much of a chance to advance to the next round of the playoffs.... Sign in to see full entry.

Coming Attractions

As the MLB playoffs progress to the league pennant series and culminate in the World Series, I’ll gradually wind down the baseball emphasis in this blog. How fast I taper off will depend to a great extent on how well my Tigers perform over the rest of their series with the Yankees. Even if the... Sign in to see full entry.

Tigers 4, Yankees 3

That is all I know right now, other than it was a game postponed from yesterday due to rain. It’s all I need to know right now. Oh, happy day! My Tigers will not be swept out of the way in three games. And with two of the remaining three games in Detroit, they stand a fighting chance to make it to... Sign in to see full entry.

Pitching is the key

…for the Detroit Tigers in the playoffs. It was pitching that got them there, and it’s pitching that’ll determine how long they stay alive in the postseason. The early indication is not long. This is no great surprise to this lifelong Tiger fan. Detroit’s defense, aside from pitching, has not been... Sign in to see full entry.

With a whimper.

After leading the AL Central most of the season, the Tigers ended the regular season on a sour note by losing five straight games and backing into the playoffs as the AL Wild Card. I shouldn’t be complaining. At least they made it into the postseason. I’m delighted Detroit even had a winning season... Sign in to see full entry.
