We have a choice: we can piss and moan, or we can adapt...

I think maybe adapting would be the healthier choice. During the night I woke up to find the TV still on. Apparently I neglected to punch the sleep button on my remote, and so there I was, watching from my bed as the nature photographers and explorers wandered around an ice shelf somewhere in the... Looking for a good story?

There's a website waiting for your inspection: Sniplits.com I submitted my short story "Cages" there a month or two ago -- based on its listing in Poets & Writers. This morning I received an email from the publisher, Anne, who said she's received so many submissions she's got all she can publish for... Sign in to see full entry.

When Mama was a kid

they lived in a sod house on 140 acres her folks homesteaded in North Dakota. It was apparently a tough environment, blistering hot summers, blizzards in winter. She said her papa had made the house by plowing a layer of sod from the virgin prairie, eight or ten-inch strips cut with a horse-drawn... Sign in to see full entry.

Nobody Cheers When You Win at Solitaire (story)

Derik was no king of hearts, no one’s idea of an alpha male. Nor was he a jack of diamonds. He wasn’t particularly entertaining, not a flashy dancer. His looks, his social status, his line of patter wouldn’t attract a queen of any suit, maybe nothing higher than a seven. In the ranks of a poker... Sign in to see full entry.

Did you ever date a guy named Chuck?

What's in a name, my friend Willie S. once asked. But it seems to me Chucks and Charlies are a type. Guys named Dave are sweet and steady, Jims are mechanically inclined if not downright genius and taking things apart and putting them back together. Every Richard has a bit of the Dick just below the... Sign in to see full entry.

Update -- Remember Cringe? (aka Whinge)

She used to share with us here on Blogit her stories of an Irish girl moving to America and meeting her in-laws... I see her on Facebook from time to time. She's as beautiful as ever, has a daughter Rowan now coming into bud in her early teens. Rowan, as girls that age do, has mood swings. And her... Sign in to see full entry.

Happy Friday...

My PC has been growling at me the last few days. I keep getting pop-ups warning me that my CPU is being stressed while I'm online. Something about Microsoft using up all the virtual memory or something written in Computerese that I don't track very well with my not-so-logical mind. I suspect, Dr.... Sign in to see full entry.

Coolest morning in a month of Sundays

It's 70 degrees this a.m. and the humidity is low. So it's comfortable enough to open the door and let the fresh air in. I caught a flash on the weather channel that the high for the day in Seattle will be 73. (sigh) Speaking of fresh air, I miss the scent of the forest where I grew up. Don't miss... When I worked at Adams Printing Co., in late '59 and 1960

there was a Linotype machine, complete with a gas-fired pot of hot lead, and an area where the lead type could be melted down, poured into molds and re-used. The long sausages of lead had half-circle hooks on one end, and were called pigs. We had a big dumb country boy who worked there at the time.... Sign in to see full entry.

Obit

Sure sign of approaching old age. Checking the obits daily. I've been doing that for some time, using the old joke -- looking for my name. If it's not there, I can go ahead and carry out the plans for the day. Anyway a couple days ago I came across one for Dr. Fred R. -- one of my favorite English... Sign in to see full entry.
