Jean, my 82-year-old friend, is losing it.

I'm sad to see it. Her memory is kicking her butt, and her attitude is getting worse -- she's bossier than ever. This winter may be the last one she can stay on her own in the log cabin she built out on her fifteen acres. The cabin was a kit from the factory, the logs pre-trimmed and numbered to fit... A misty, moisty morning when cloudy was the weather

I chanced to meet an old man, clothed all in leather... Met a crooked man who walked a crooked mile and he found a crooked sixpence beside a crooked stile Hickety pickety my black hen she lays eggs for gentlemen Mistress Mary quite contrary, how does your garden grow? Peas porridge hot, peas... Sign in to see full entry.

Accident, serendipity or is the universe telling me something?

Turned on NPR, confirmed that begging & whining week is over. There was an interview with a writer, sandwiched between some pap about baseball and irony* and something about politics. He's one I haven't read, new book coming out, but I didn't make a note of it, so don't remember his name or the... Sign in to see full entry.

Cross your fingers: maybe begging and whining week is over...

I love NPR. I hate their fund-raising campaigns. So for that interminable week of constant nagging, I switch to an oldies music station -- '70s and '80s rock, the rebel calls that have become "old people's music." Maybe there'll be "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" today, and "This American Life" and Klik... Sign in to see full entry.

Changing Mind

Sometimes you think, as you mature into the older (hopefully wiser) version of yourself, that it's your perspective and increased understanding that has taken over and mellowed your attitude. At least that's what I've done over the past few years. But then some medical show brings experts on the... Sign in to see full entry.

The best thing to do with TV

Turn it off. Is it me, or are the news networks failing to report NEWS. We get a lot of opinion, a lot of celebrity gossip, a lot of back and forth about political ads. I want to know who's doing what on Wall Street. I want to know the congress and the president are tightening the laws and stopping... Sign in to see full entry.

Confused and dismayed and not just about the election

It's open season on liars. And politicians. But I repeat myself. This one throws a bit of mud on that one, that one scoops up some dirt of his own. Old slogans come to mind "Don't re-elect anybody." The only winners during Nasty Time are the TV stations running all those ads. They must be making a... Sign in to see full entry.

Naut's "Jag, my Doggie" post today is about road trips

White Mustang, Blue Highway Once I tried to escape the choking status quo that burned my lungs like mosquito abatement fumes on a summer night, sucked in through the blades of a window fan. I knew there had to be more somewhere; and rolled out of town to look for it, blew past cartographer's dots... Sign in to see full entry.

Coping Mechanism

REJECTION NOTICE You begin to fear the Red Queen isn’t coming, although there are clear openings and all the others wait like paparazzi in hope of snapping the Kardashians. As hope fades, she arrives deigns to pose for flashbulbs, grants interviews on the red carpet, and would you believe? She’s... Sign in to see full entry.

Booty Call: The story of Scotty and Lynn, cont'd

Scott stayed in his office, making phone calls, coming out only to head for the john or back for more coffee until lunch time. There was usually a cadre of staffers who headed into town for lunch at Hell’s Half Acre, or over to the student center if there wasn’t time. Scott headed up the hall to the...
