Celebrating Valentine's Day

Last week, I got the idea that we could celebrate Valentine's Day with couples who are close to us. So, I asked my two sisters and two common friends if they would like to join us for a dinner on February 14. We thought it would be a good way for them to meet our friends from Amsterdam, who they all... Sign in to see full entry.

Parallel Lives: Living Dangerously

Isn't it amazing how people's lives run parallel to ours? Two days ago, I was talking to my friend Agnes, who is visiting from Amsterdam, about East Timor and the President Ramos Horta, who was with me in Harvard. Agnes was asking where the people who lived in my house in Afghanistan were. I said... Sign in to see full entry.

Catching Up

It is amazing how little and how much time it takes to catch up. My friends Agnes and Derk are here after two years, to the exact date. Last time they came, Agnes's mother had passed away - a month before. This time, Derk's mother passed away six months ago. As for us, our son has gone away to... Sign in to see full entry.

Calm and storm together

Have you ever felt that it's all calm around you and yet there is a storm in your head? I feel a little like that now. I went to bed at 2 AM and was up at 6 AM. Woken by my husband's alarm and knowing that he and 4 other people would be moving out of the house within an hour. I wanted to sleep but... Sign in to see full entry.

A state of mind

I have a houseful of guests. I didn't really expect them. I was gearing up for my friend form Netherlands, Agnes and her husband Derk, who are coming for three weeks, starting tonight. Last weekend, my husband said, very causally, that he had spoken to his sister, who lives in the mountains. She... Sign in to see full entry.

The Visit

Yesterday, a friend came to visit. I met him in 2001, attending a personal growth workshop in Goa, the state with some of the best beaches in India. It draws great crowds during the winter season (October-April). The rest of the months, it's called the 'off season' period, which is when many... Sign in to see full entry.

Journaling as Therapy

I'm writing an article on Journaling as Therapy. In preparation for this, I pulled out all my old journals. Well, not all, as I have thrown some away. These were ones I wrote when I was under 12. They had entries such as 'went to Lena's today' or 'played tennis and swam', 'maths exam'.....I think... Sign in to see full entry.

What the eye can see

Yesterday, my husband and I had an appointment with a company that specialises in kitchen and bathrooms. We are trying to get the unfinished business in our kitchen (since the last four years) completed. The showroom of this company is only 5 kms from the President's residence. It's called Kalkaji,... Voting for Hillary

If I could, I would vote for Hillary. It's just that I can't vote. Although I lived in the US for 14 years, was a green card holder, and active on Capitol Hill, I still couldn't vote. I was not a US citizen. And, that was OK with me. Now, from far away, I watch the campaigns and election process,... Sign in to see full entry.

The Magnificent Marigold

"> This bunch of marigolds grow in the area outside my gate, under the shade of ficus and bougainvillea - which we have cordoned off with a gate. They also grow in the back yard, between the roses and creepers. The gardener planted them around October and they are in full blossom now, and a... Sign in to see full entry.
