In Singapore
I am in Singapore for a meeting, living in a hotel in Chinatown. It’s quiet and active. Today is my third day and so far I have located (on the first day) a divine tea shop with many kinds of tea, teapots, glasses and cups, strainers etc. I got some of all. I spotted and salivated over antique...

How to discover your own Refuge
Earier this week, I was looking for reading that our Sangha could discus at the Saturday meeting. I came upon this dharma talk by Thich Nhat Hanh on 11 July, 2005 in Plum Village, France. The talk resonated with me. I often feel overwhelmed by everything around me and I could relate to what Thay was...

Sunflower Surprise
Last Monday, I left the home at 6.30 AM headed north on National Highway 1 which runs through my home state – Haryana - to visit telecentres called CSCs – Community Service Centres – run by local entrepreneurs. About two hours into the journey, outside urban limits, vast open spaces appeared. In...

The 10 minute Mango Sprout Salad
What’s for breakfast, asks Mahesh, my husband. Sprout salad, I ask? OK, he says. So, I take out the glass jar with the mung sprouts, also spying the glass jar with wheat sprouts (left over from making Rejuvelac). I get those out. Next, I need a bowl. I get the green-blue hand thrown one I bought...

Summer Bounty
I am uncomfortable in the hot heat of Delhi, and anywhere else. But, there are things about the summer I like. Trees - I already wrote about the Amaltas tree. There are other flowering trees, many whose names I do not know, because I have some kind of a blockage in my brain when it comes to names of...

Loving Amaltas
You can’t miss it at this time of the year. The yellow bloom, stark against the blue and not so blue sky grab your attention. It’s all over the place. It’s the Amaltas tree, also known as the Indian Laburnum. It blooms every year, and every year I feel I am seeing them for the first time. The first...

Voting Blues – Off the list
I didn’t get excited about the general elections being held in India, till yesterday – the day before I was to vote. I had missed voting in the two previous general elections - because of some goof up in the voters’ lists. In 2004, we had just moved to Greenfields, in Haryana, where we currently...

Monkeys for breakfast
Fooled you! Not having monkeys for breakfast. Just watching them around the house and trying to get Aloe away from them. Well, the area we live in is kind of wild. meaning, not too many homes or development. Compared to most areas in the city and outer city limits, its still open and you can see the...

Storms, pots and plants
Over the last week there have been strong winds in Delhi, bringing dust, chaos and causing havoc. Three days ago, three large pots fell over, crashed and broke. They have been with us for over 10 years - housing ficus, frangipani and local trees. Yesterday, Mahesh and I bought pots to replace them...

In praise of handwork
The domestic crisis continues, with many turns and twists. This is the fourth week of no full time help but we have learned many lessons in the 21 days gone by. First and foremost we learned that we can manage without full time help. We have part time help. Chintin the perky 18 year old continues to...
