BAR FIGHTS ARE ALWAYS INTERESTING, AND GENERALLY MESSY..

FIGHT In a bar, Friday night, Alone again, alright, Nursing a beer along, Really hope for conversation, Preferably with opposite sex, Yet, knew my lines stale, As stale as the beer nuts, Bye and bye, woman smiled, She seemed smiling at me, I smiled back, grinned really, Then I heard an angry voice, Don’t smile at my wife, you SOB, Wiped the smile, offered apologies, No affect, hostility rampant, Ass just spoiling for a fight, Nowhere to run, no backup either, Stand my ground, make best of it, He... THE SURFACE OF THE FACELESS SEA HIDES MANY SECRETS AND SOULS...

SHIPWRECK Upon the bottom of the sea, Deep within the mud unknown, Broken on her side there rests, A gallant lady ship come to end, Her days of voyages and battles, All so long ago, memory forgotten, Who she was, from where and to, Flag and name once proud, rotted away, Now not even dust upon the wind, What of the men who sailed her, Perhaps even women graced her deck, This their grave in the dark deep, No stone, no mourners, just the fish, What could we write of these brave souls, Or millions... ANCIENTS NAMED THE ELEMENTS, FORCES BEYOND THEIR COMPREHENSION...

FIRE Fire the great consumer, Warm embers to the Sun itself, Energy released as bonds broken, Harnessed, all things possible, From camp fire to star flight, A warm and cheery glow, Chestnuts roasting, light flickering, Devastating wild fire, leveling all, Much and more, up in smoke, Driver of global warming, Yet maker of civilizations, Fire in the hole, big bang indeed, Level mountains, smelt ores, Cook a meal, power a ship, All this and so much more, Fire, an ancient elemental, The mastery of... COMPLEX BIOLOGICAL STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS....

THE HAND The evolved human hand, A marvelous instrument, Most complex of all body, Most bones, most nerves, Five digits, counting thrum, Slender and delicate some, Others roughen and scarred, Dexterity, strength, precision, Can stoke a baby’s cheek, Yet can crush a foe as well, Holding and swinging, Grapping, plinking, jabbing, A place of rings and gloves, Emblem of both come and stop, Where we be without them, With the hand, short is the distance, Between flint napping and the stars, Be glad... ANCIENTS NAMED THE ELEMENTS, FORCES BEYOND THEIR COMPREHENSION...

WIND Without form or substance, Yet elementally powerful, What is the wind swirling, Crafter of continents vast, Nowhere it does not range, Conveyer of life itself, Bringing of rains and seeds, New life and substance too, Harbinger of death sudden, Bringer of storms appalling, Dust and mighty hammering, Power of potential, mighty indeed, Harnessed by sail and mill, Work gets done, travel far, Give it an opening, tears asunder, Force of thermal dynamic differences, God’s great brush sweeping all,... POT WHAT YOU SEE, IS NOT ALWAYS WHAT YOU GET, SURPRISES ALWAYS....

POT Upon a shelf, Dusty and forlorn, Sits a piece of pottery, A simple pot, Nothing more, Nothing less, Darkish brown, Fired, imprinted spirals, The museum home, Came by accident, No providence, Unwanted inheritance, Donated for tax write off, Out of context and time, Nothing really special, Save this pot is old, Ten thousand years old, Perhaps even more, Created when man on edge, Ice age still retreating, Hunter gathering most, Before kings and wars, Writing, and many other things, Mankind,... MATTER OF THING IS THIS, HUMAN THOUGHT, MYSTERIOUS...

CALULATIONS It is said that everything is numbers, With sufficient time and knowledge, Even the music of the spheres quantifiable, Thus all the secrets of the heavens, knowable, Reduced to lines and columns plain and cold, Yet, there is much of the universe, starkly apart, Not crunchable by mathematics man or machine, Chance yes, chaos theory does nicely there, But what of other factors, strange and obtuse, The human factor, strange indeed, complex, One can say ridiculous or sublime, resistant... THIS OLD HOUSE It was an old house, Once far grander, Still had charm left, Advertised as fixer upper, Two centuries of people life, Births, fights, marriages, deaths, This and so much more, All within these four walls, Heart of pine floors, Stone exterior, oak paneling, Plumbing and kitchen ancient, Nice conservatory, porch too, Still strong, tight and plumb, The winter gales shook not, Yet the house was lonely, All too long had she been empty, When ever prospects came by, She silenced her... DEATH IS OFTEN ONLY THE BEGINNING...

SECOND LIFE Down upon the ground, Lay a log cut harsh, A mighty tree this morning, In forest vast and virgin, For centuries it had stood, Then the little men, Come they with axes, Flashing in the sun, Down the tree fell crashing, Dismembered, stripped, Team of horses dragged, To the mill and great saw, Into timbers stout sawn, Seasoned for awhile, Then to the river bank, With thousands of others, Trees many joined together, By shipwrights giving birth, A ship a part they became, Frigate, narrow,... THINKING TOO MUCH AGAIN...

UNIVERSITY To be more than what you are, More than happenstance, ah design, Learn from masters the arts of man, Gather to oneself the wisdom of ages, Know the history of man achievements, Go further, understand the failures too, Good company and good cheer, plus sex, All the while striving for excellence, and GPA, Mentally, spiritually, physically, emotionally, All this and party too, friends for a life time, Must expand the frontiers farther more, So the next generation, even more to learn,...
