Yes and tea was a bit of a saviour as folk boiled the water before drinking. The water was pretty murky especially if a rat or two fell down the well, not like your pure liquid. Can't say I like it a lot used to be gin and lime or rum and blackcurrant etc.

I used to love a cold beer on a hot summer evening, but thanks to its
gluten content, can't do that any more. I used to love Guinness, had a glass of that at The Owl and Thistle, an Irish themed bar down on 1st Ave. in Seattle - just a block or two up from Pier 54 where the ferries docked. Maybe it was the atmosphere I enjoyed as much as the drink... These days its a shot of Bushmill's on the rocks if I imbibe...
