So sorry for your grief. I was raised around alcoholics all my life. My dad left my mom with 3 girls to raise alone but before the divorce, he had gotten another woman pregnant and moved away. He loved the bottle, too, more than anything and he died at the age of 54 (but to look at him, he looked 74). I think some people just have "addictive" genes because some people can drink a couple and put it down; whereas, like your husband, they become consumed by it. This was another side of my husband that he kept secret. After 39 years of marriage, it all came out and that's what brought me back to Blogit in July 2011. I know what you mean by wishing he loved his family more than the bottle. In my case, my children don't know what he has done to me in the past. I chose to stay but when he drinks too much, my sadness comes back. I, too, wonder why he let's the bottle control him but the addiction is strong. Ask Wiley. I've read his book. Just know you are among friends here. Many of us have gone through the same thing you are going through or are still going through it; just taking it one day at a time.
