The Somalis have brought very visible Ramadan to Tucson.
We have large Arabic, middle eastern communities here in town, but they keep a low profile, while the Somalis stand out like the brightest tropical flowers in a beige desert garden.

I always forget and offer them water as it is necessary here, but they refuse it until sundown. I do like the food offered at the end of Ramadan at the mosque and always go with my friend, we take baklava and everyone eats and laughs and the children have a wonderful time.

The Somali men like the Tucson University mosque but the women, not so much.....

maybe they will open their own mosque here someday soon.

I would love to have cannons here to signify its beginnings and wish that we had huge towers and calls to prayer as I love that sound......

like the chapel bells at the church down the street from our house in Guadalajara, Mexico, the sound every hour blended into life itself.....comforting and yet sometimes barely noticed.
