I agree, to a certain extent, vickip
Taps. and Pat_B are two of my favorite bloggers in the category, and there are other fine ones who also do quite well.  My "notebook" doesn't do quite as well, I'm sad to say, though I think it is one of my better blogs most of the time.  So the audience doesn't always come in great numbers.  But I settle for the audience I can get because I prefer to write what I think and feel over just chasing a big audience.  I think most of the top bloggers are fine writers who have also struck a responsive chord among most of our fellow members.  But I don't think it's a bad thing when you have less than universal appeal, even if it does mean writing for pennies rather than dollars.  The occasional interesting comment from a reader, such as yourself, is what makes it all worthwhile.  Especially when I can have a little bit of fun by poking fun.

There are usually between 400 and 500 blogs receiving at least one post every seven days, and many of them are posted to on a daily basis.  It would border on being a full time job just to read and comment on all of them.  Over time I learned to concentrate on areas that were most interesting to me, and to balance that with trying to read everyone who comments on one or more of my blogs.  It's still a daunting task if you are to do much writing on your own blog, or blogs.  This is where paying attention to the ratings, including the ratings on each individual category, comes in handy.  It gives you a pretty good idea of where the action is, and what does and doesn't work.  Then you have to decide whether to shoot for high ranking, or to be yourself and hope you find an audience.  I chose the latter.  By the way, that's an interesting list of blogs you've got.  I'll try to stop by and sample some of them soon.

Hmmm, interesting ... but I just looked at number one in journal ... (Taps)
and there are as many journal as there are anything else, even if they are writing poetry, and number one is, and has been for as long as I can remember, Taps' "Perplexities" ... always a great read and always interesting.  I think that's the key - positive, interesting posts - write them, and they will come!

I've been doing my share of reading and trying to do a little analyzing too
just to see what the trends are. I'm trying to find things that really peak my own interest instead of just whats popular, but I'm also trying to take time to read the fresh writes, I like to see who is contributing. I too see a lot of poetry. It amazes me that there is so much prose being written. I find it a little hard to keep up with.
