brings back memories of my several trips to Egypt and specifically Cairo in the 80s and 90s. Besides the monuments my favourite experiences were the markets, streets, and just plain hanging out. So much history in that part of the world and so much beauty. And, that you are there during Eid - so blessed. Cheers.

Fascinating! You do manage to convey a sense of the place! And I concur with Pat! I've never been to Cairo, and I don't know I'll ever make it, but if I do, I won't be staying at the Hyatt...
And I do hope you'll have pictures for us...

Nearly forgot my first point. Your grandfather, the poet.
How wonderful for you to have his wisdom and his perspective to ground you in the whirlpool of politics today. He may have been physically blind, but he clearly had a vision to share. Thank you for this blog. :)pat

Lovely descriptions. I hope you got photos.
Love the phrase "culturally scrubbed resorts." It's so apt -- happens everywhere. So many Americans take a plane and go 2,000 miles to visit a city with freeways like the one they left behind, eat at a chain restaurant like the one near their house, shop at a mall with all the same stores. We're being homogenized.
