I dunno the answer but I think it's up to the Indians to change things...if they desire to.

Really? Here in Malaysia, our women folks, once married, will have to decide for themselves where to stay - with in-laws or on their own! The choice is theirs but it preferred that they stay on their own - for their own good. Thanks for visiting my site. Please come again!

It takes courage to go against tradition but if your partner is supportive, then it can be done provided you have the finance to do so. Every one  or society looks up to the rich and wealthy for she or he who has the gold makes the rules. I hope you will succeed in changing that traditionkatzs

Afzal
Because India is a patriarchal society, where it is assumed that women are property of men - fathers, husbands, brothers, sons. Therefore, once she is married, a woman, like property, is transfered to her husband's family - who in turn believe they now own her. However, as you know, this is all changing and more and more women are refusing to put up with this.  Unfortunately, there are few institutions to support women when they need help in challenging the system.  But, its happening!

Hi Afzal

I didn't know that.

Tradition is so hard to break. Usually  a movement has to come with a group pushing for change.  Such a movement was held here with Women's Suffragette in the early days about 1800 I think, It can be done, change I mean, but it is a full time challenge.

thanks for the post,

Lou

Afzal

I really don't have an answer for that sweetie.
Maybe it's because the culture requires that most women can't or are unable to work, and the parents don't want to be burdened with them?
