ropes/beds
"In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase "goodnight, sleep tight."
I am trying to wrap my head around the picture of a matress with a rope and a frame- seems to me there would be no reason for the rope if there was a frame. What was the purpose of the rope, why did the matress need to be tightened anyway- were they too fluffy or something? Hard to wrap my head around how comfortable that would be- did they leave the ropes on the bed?
