I think that you are right, there is an element of self-consciousness about what is being said about you behind your back, but then this can happen in any form of communication such as girls' talk.

Just a little bit of
jealousy I would say. It's all about fearing what we don't know and curious about what we are saying about ourselves (or them!) to other people!
