- Go to Reflection: Why prostitution should be legalised ?
I believe
prostitution is an insttution that we pretend doesn't exist, or have issues with beacuse it deals with the issue (other than money) that we have the most difficulty with - sex. It needs to be legalised, to keep both women and men safe from sexual diseases.

This is a very serious issue. You have written it very well. I am not qualified to really comment on the legal issue because I feel it is demoralizing to both sexes. I believe the trade is wrong. I don't believe anything wrong is better if we give up and allow it to be legal. This is not where you are coming from but again my comment is worthless for the issue at hand.

proc says
Prostitution is legal in new zealand and its advocates used all the arguments contained in your post and some of the comments. However it hasnt really improved the lives of prostitutes from what we have seen.Underage young kids are still being exploited by greedy adults.Alot of women left their regular madams to run their own businesses at home so that they dont have to pay out part of their hard earned cash but they are then vulnerable to violence etc.Quite a few prostitutes have been killed since legalising it.And there is regular protesting by neighbours who feel threatened by all these women opening brothels in residential areas where kids see the goings on.In one case the drunk customers went to the wrong house and harrased a women with her kids because the whorehouse was in the same street. And the whole idea of prostitution still has a stigma attached to it, despite being legal.I agree with one of the comments who said people dont solve relationship problems if theres an easy way out.

I think one of the reasons
it is illegal, is that married women do not want men to have an easy outlet for avoiding problems in their relationships. If the men can escape from confronting relationship issues, or find means of relieving sexual tension elsewhere with having to reconcile problems with their wives, it will increase divorce. However, I think we all know the truth, which is, if the man has a propensity towards finding comfort in other women, he will have his affairs with or without prositutes. Also, sex is such a powerful persuasion in society. For people considered deviants to have so much power scares many conservatives, who generally believe sex should only occur after marriage. Although, they find once they are married, there is no guarantee from divorce no matter how conservative people are, nor is there a guarantee of happiness and sexual fulfillment. Funny how traditional marriage vows have couples promise these things to eachother, as if that's realistic. Interesting post!

I don't know what I think about it. . .
I think its overt legalization might send a bad message to children and young teens. However, just as the poor will always be with us, prostitution will always be with us, drugs will always be with us and abortion will always be with us. Maybe more time and resources should be spent on a war against the causes of these things than on the things themselves.

it is a tricky issue.
some facts-all prostitutes are not doing it for a living.
some one exposing nudity and making gains is itself a prostitution.
where there is sexual permissiveness and virginity is not a concern for men and
women, prostitution may not be in huge demand.
crime enters when there is huge gap between demand and supply.
in any society, prostitution exists, even overtly.all keep a blind eye to it.
legalizing is legitimizing.vulnerable can attracted to it for fame, money or
passion.
no regulation can work,if there is competition, huge money involved or if coming
from basic instincts.
only random thoughts.

While I feel that you are right, in a way, I feel that there would be too many issues involved. I'm not sure how it is everywhere else, but here it can be quite dangerous.
I've heard of prostitutes getting beaten or even killed over things like the fact that the clients don't want to pay even the little bit of money.
They don't make enough money to really live well on, and it would be likely that they would have to employ bodyguards and such for protection.
It would be something that would have to require a license, and anyone without one would have to be prosecuted "severely"...as people exploit children for this purpose, and there will always be the unlegal ones who are willing to do it for less money.
I know the thoughts are good, but I just can't imagine a workable solution.
Also in this society, it goes against a lot of religious beliefs...so people would rather ignore that the problem exists, on some level.
Somehow, I think maybe free clinics, with no questions asked, would be a better option.

It's hard for me to agree on any level on legalizing something that is
demoralizing to men and women both...I cannot participate in legalizing something that I believe to be morally wrong, but I do see your point and many others because of the health aspect. What would be better is trying to elevate man's thinking to the point of not participating in prostitution on any level, but something tells me people would rather indulge than change.

Are you trying to steal my thunder over here?
I lean toward the idea that legalized prostitution might help to decrease the number of communicable diseases and health related issues that pertain to the profession. However, as I mentioned in my blog this morning, there are more issues that impact the idea. There are rule breakers in legal professions.
