Yes it is true. We have to have a second income in order to keep all these extra goodies and that makes it to tense to properly raise our children some of the time.

Isn't that amazing. Everyone has one now but I certainly the first one I had. I have missed you.

You are so privileged. to have all that wonderful room. There may come a time we will need space and freedom to live more simply. Thanks for reading.

I have looked for you around here. I have missed you. Thank you for showing up. Your posts leave a large hole in stable political writing. Thanks for nice comment.

I too like baking from scratch, it is not the norm for me. I am mostly concerned that there was so much more time available then than now.

Maybe it’s not so much that we’re busier theses days but have  our sense of priorities is all screwed up. Busy day at work: “Oh, let the kids play video games”. Have some time to kill: “Think I’ll lose myself on the computer for an hour or two”. Consumed with material items, the second car, the bigger house: “Better work longer hours or need that second income”. The true sense of family, of sharing, and of enjoying one another becomes lost.

I remember getting a colored TV when I was kindergarten
It was a huge deal as we were the first in the neighborhood to have one.

Yes I remember!I often wonder what would happen if the electricity went off permanently.

I live in an area where I could use my gas grill or the wood burning barbeque fireplace. I have canned good, (some I preserved) not a lot but enough for several weeks.  I would use the frozen foods first - until they were ruined.

As for the light, I have kerosene lamps, flashlights and batteries for the radio. I have a fire burning stove.  As for the other conveniences, I would miss the toilet but could probably get by (have 5 acres or more).

I WOULD MISS THE COMPUTER AND MY BLOGGITVILLE FRIENDS AND FAMILY CONTACTS.

As for the communication within the family, that would be lovely, my greatest adventure is probably having family at the table and talking and figuring out how to make the next week into what is good for us all. WE play games and read.

Yes, I love the conveniences but relate to your post.  I remember and I am glad!

I liked you little piece about the early forties. I was not even thought of at that time, but I think somewhere in my other life I might have been there. (Joke) I always enjoyed being a home maker, baking cakes and cookies from scratch. I watch very little tv and so on. I agree that technology is overpowering us.

The things that are absolute necessities today were not accessible. Today you cannot choose to live a simpler and less expensive lifestyle. I too believe progress in many ways is a ploy to have us so engrossed at what goes on around us that we really do not see what is actually happening before and to us.

justi,
Great post. I can picture that time eventhough I ''was still unborn''.

Good Morning, Justi!  Your post reminds me of Little House on the Prairie.  I would not get bored had I lived during this era.  I enjoy taking care of my home and my family.  It's just sad that in today's world, a world of hussling and bussling to and fro, most families require two incomes to survive.  It seems progress and technology are tools of the devil in the sense that they've stripped us of family values.    It's good to have you back, Justi.  I missed you while you were away.

Those are wonderful words. We all seem to be writing about time toady, many of us in one sense or another. Thanks for stopping by.

Thoughtful post; there never seem to be enough hours in the day, and I have just commented to Wiley about how quickly time seems to slip by:

When, as a child,
I laughed and wept,
Time crept

And later,
As I older grew,
Time flew.

Soon I shall find,
While hurrying on,
Time gone.

This is true. We have everything at our finger tips but time and happiness. Sad!

Aren't they amazing. I haven't seen any of those old things in years and years, but life was warmer then wasn't it?

My aunt kept her wood cookstove years beyond the time that other people had electric and gas. Her kitchen was warm and cozy even in winter. Then she got an electric and her house was cold. I washed clothes up until a few years ago in a Maytag with a ringer. The clothes looked much cleaner than from the automatic. And smelled better when hung out on the line.
