I realized that I might have sounded a little snotty there...and I didn't mean to...I think your headlines are very entertaining and creative...really!  I was trying to be clever...see, can't do it! You are able to pull off the occasional tricky headline...but still make the post worthwhile enough that the reader doesn't feel duped....that's what I meant by the realllllllly.

krisles--
thanks for your input. You know, headline writing is a bit of an art form...not exactly rocket science, but still takes some creativity. That said, if your heart isn't into it, then it's pretty hard to come up with something that entices others.

No, you write clever headlines....sometimes realllllly clever headlines...but, the post is always worth it, and that is the test.  Now, my problem.....my headlines are soooo boring...I just can't write headlines and I know it. I just get so putoff with the whole headline thing.  It irritates me, frankly.  I don't like to try to be sold..never have.  I know sales and marketing, too...and I appreciate a great marketing campaign...notice I said a great one.  But, I don't need it and don't really ever want it.  Skip the salad...give me the meat and potatoes.  Just tell me what the post is about and then write a great post.  But, like I said, I'm boring!

If the posts are as interesting as the headline then I'm going to return and read the writer again. If they are not, then I won't unless another blogger makes reference to the writer in another headline or post and I think there's going to be a major war brewing and I'll want to find out who wins. As for describing yourself as a click whore, shame on you.   You would have followers even with simple headlines because you know how to interact with the reader. Shadow

MsQ..When women call other women whores, they are usually jealous.  I mean, that woman is getting something the other woman ain't.  And when men call women 'whore', it is the same thing, but it is because somebody else is getting what he ain't!  When I click on a headline, if the content doesn't engage me from the beginning, I just click off...like any other medium.  And anymore, I don't even bother to click the first time on some bloggers here for that same reason......I've been duped into wasting my time one too many times by them.  Perhaps they think they're just being clever?  As far as your headlines are concerned, I am happy to report I've never felt that way about your posts.

and there's a little trick called 'bait and switch'. it's when you give something the appearance of what you do not intend to show at all. i don't get that with your posts, but i have noticed it in other places. i decided not to go into sales due to the deceitful tactics that are often used.

quirky-girl

absolutely not, but i'm not a good judge of that...i tell Ari  the same thing. People I read regualry I barely glance at their headline cause i'm going to visit them anyway. People I don't read as often, a headline will send me there...you, i just read, what ever you throw up there. Don't let people mess with your head, just write...clicks mean very little in the end, and blog postion goes up and down. readers are fickle and busy and have all kinds of reasons for picking someone to read. my reason just happens to be cause i like the person and what they are offering...silly reason for reading huh?

quirks...

In most cases, when I see a creative headline, I can't wait to read the post to see how it relates.  It's entertaining for me.  I think some take it way too seriously.  That's just my opinion.

I can only name one headline in which I could not figure out the relation to the post and that was the recent one by Joe Love.  I commented on it.  I didn't feel tricked at all, it just confused me.  I still love Joe Love.

So, to answer your question.... no, I don't think you or anyone else is a "click whore."  I think it's a stupid term used by uptight and possibly envious individuals.

I don't feel tricked by this post you mentioned...
but i sometimes felt badly tricked by some other bloggers

posted by Marshallengraved on August 11, 2005 at 10:01 AM | link to this | reply

Most of this, I've copied from a comment I left earlier for MayB as it seemed directly relevant...

I'd say that misleading headlines fall into 2 categories:

  1. They pull you in and disappoint you - bad - I'm less likely to go back
  2. They pull you in, don't give you what you were expecting, but give you something better than you were expecting - good - I'm very likely to go back. In the second category, you can often spot the irony if you already know the writer.

The one that bugs me most is:' I'm leaving'. I think it hurts the emotions of genuine fans of the writer. It's a quick win, but a long-term loss. Sometimes people are genuinely leaving and you really do want to say farewell. This cry-wolf lie is painful to all.

I can't say as I've read a Category 1 from you yet. So I come back.
