Hmmmm...
To answer the question, "Would you want to be able to make choices knowing how they would alter the course of your life?" That is a tough one. To answer that as spiritual clergy, I'd answer no, because if we could know how our decisions would alter the course of our life all the time, we wouldn't be living this physical life. Hence, that is why psychics cannot be psychic for ourselves. It would defeat our purpose for living this life. To answer the question as a regular person (if that's possible for me) I'd say, Hell, yeah!

Pete, not necessarily that we've done everything right but we accept
that this is the choice we made at the time. But you're right, we can always strive to make better choices.

Shadow, nor does it hurt to dream...

Quirky, I would change a few things.
To say you wouldn't, would be to say you've done everything right. Who can say that, and if someone can, don't we always strive for better?

Quirk,

Yeah, probably right, but doesn't hurt to speculate. shadow

Ariala, yeah that does make it difficult sometimes to act kindly.
Or at least to *think* before acting unkindly.

Shadow, I'm kinda leaning toward agreeing with Qwerty, though,
that even if we took a "do-over" the universe would see to it that we ended up in the same place. I don't know, though.

Quirky, I've rarely done it intentionally, but a few times I did because I
was lashing out due to my own pain.

Ariala, intentional...or unintentional/unavoidable??

Quirk,

Yes, I'd like to go back 1 year ago and know what I know now for sure. I guarantee I would have made some very different choices. shadow

Quirky, more than I'd like to admit.

Ariala, first, hurting people is an unavoidable fact of life,
and second, I seriously doubt that there were that many. But it's nice that you thought about doing that.

posted by Julia. on August 4, 2004 at 7:08 PM | link to this | reply

If I could, I would go back and change some choices I made that hurt
other people.  I've made many, so I'd have to just start my life over again.

T99,
That seems a clear case when hindsight would have been beneficial to your family. Had you known what the autopsy revealed, you would have made different decisions. I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

Wilds,
I agree…but one can think about "changing a choice" and have it not necessarily be about regrets.

posted by Julia. on August 4, 2004 at 4:02 PM | link to this | reply

Groucho,
deciding to try something you didn't IS changing a choice!! Your choice was not to do a particular thing, and you wonder what would have happened if you had. Actually the second part of my question to RAD was "What is something you wish you had done, but didn't." Your answer fits that to a T!

Scriber, sure…but would you choose it now if you could??

Qwerty,
your comment has really started the wheels churning in my head. You've planted so many "what if's" and I have no way to really arrive at an answer or an opinion. I find the "free will" concept intriguing and have thought about it a lot over the years.

I would have pushed for another opinion in 1988 when my brother was diagnosed terminal.  We found out during the autopsy that had he had a lung removed, it would have removed *all* of the tumors.  He might not still be alive today, but he could have had a few more years......instead of five months.

Quirks
I don't waste a lot of time with regrets.  One can only move forward.

i am married

not a day goes by when i don't think, shit i should have done this instead of that, or i should have said this  or not said that!  Remember the infamous throwing-out-the-new-hats post??!!

okay seriously -- i have to fight very hard not to live in the house of regret.   not easy to do.  it's not so much changing a choice as much as deciding to try thing i didn't try -- like apply to more than one college, or jazz band in 7th grade.  I have wondered if i'd pressed my parents if i could have auditioned for LaGuardia High School for Music and Art and Performing Arts (the school that is the subject of the film/tv series Fame).  we were no longer living in nyc but i wonder if they'd let me stay with my grandmother.  but again that's all not about choice, that's about dreams lost or deferred.  oh well, i'll get back to you. tg

Sometimes I think that there are things I would like to go back and change, but then I might not be where I'm at today. So, no I wouldn't change anything. Because of the mistakes I used to make constantly I started using a Tarot Card Spread that helped me see the different angles. Go to My Favorite Tarot Card Spread- Helps Me See If I'm About To Screw Up  I posted it if you want to try it. Great post.

I'm assuming

when I go back, I don't lose knowledge of what happened afterwards, although if I TRULY went back I'd lose the knowledge of the future of that outcome.

I'd like to change a few choices just to see what the eventual outcomes would be. One little choice could change your life, or it could not make any difference at all. It may be the case that whatever choices we make, we end up in the same situation we are currently occupying. Makes a point about whether or not we have "free will".

I don't think there is an experience
I would do any differently.  Of course, in the difficult moments we wish we could, but I think we make certain choices to end up in a certain place eventually even if we don't realize the path we're on at the time.  Great post, thanks!

Talion, very well said! The fabric of our lives is woven through each
experience, but it all adds up to one fabulous tapestry!! I like you just the way you are as well.

Quirk

There are some things I wish I could go back and change, but even if it was possible, I couldn't take the chance. Our decisions become woven into the tapestry of our lives. One "stitch" leads to another and that one leads to another, etc. Changing one choice would by default change all other decisions that came after it. It would start a chain reaction that could result in me being a completely different type of person in a completely different set of circumstances. I'm not perfect, but I'm glad I am who and what I am. I can't take that risk.

nevertheless, I haven't seen that, but now I want to see if I can
find it, as it sounds good. Do you know who is in it??

Ever see the movie Run Lola Run?  It shows how the slightest change in timing or action can alter someone's life.  And its a pretty good movie.
