Second Phase of Upgrade This Weekend

Blogit members,

As we noted last week, we have been working on a plan to improve reliability and expand capacity. The first phase to provide a temporary solution was implemented last week.

We're now ready to implement the second phase. This will provide a permanent solution that will improve reliability by expanding capacity to allow for future growth.

To minimize the effect on members, we plan to begin making changes starting Friday evening (Blogit time) and will do our best to limit any required downtime. The complete switchover will take 48-72 hours, and during this time some Blogit members may find the site a little slow. Also, search will be turned off during this time.

We will post status updates to this blog as they are available. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we improve Blogit for you.

Regards,

Brian

No more posts can be recovered

After an extensive search our hosting provider was unable to restore any more posts since the hardware problems causing the outage also caused backup problems.

The missing posts say the following: "This post cannot be displayed". The posts affected are many of those created or edited between 4/18 4:00 am and 4/21 1:00 am Blogit time.

While Blogit continues to safely host hundreds of thousands of posts and comments, technology is never 100% reliable. Please make sure to save a copy of your work on your computer or as a printout so that you always have a copy.

We very much regret the loss of your posts. As outlined in this post, we are taking immediate and longer term steps to increase reliability and capacity for the Blogit service.

Thank you for understanding.

One-Day Credit for Blogit Members

Due to the outage yesterday, Blogit is going to give all members an extra day. This means monthly cycles will end a day later. Please give us two weeks to implement this "credit".

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we improve Blogit's reliability and capacity. We very much value your participation and continued support of Blogit.

Update 5/7/04: All Blogit accounts were credited as of yesterday. This means that your subscription's renewal date has been extended by one day.

Thank you!

Improving reliability and expanding capacity

We have been working on a plan to improve reliability and expand capacity over the next three months. As a result of the recent server problems, we have decided to begin implementing this plan ahead of schedule.

The first phase of the plan, which will provide a temporary improvement in reliability by improving how data is stored, will be implemented by Friday.

The second phase will provide a permanent solution that will improve reliability by expanding capacity to allow for future growth. We will be posting a schedule for the second phase once it is final.

Network downtime

Our hosting provider replaced some hardware that was malfunctioning. Unfortunately, instead of resolving the problem quickly, as was expected, this resulted in further technical problems that took a great deal of time to resolve.

At this point, Blogit is back up and running, but some posts were lost, and will show "This post cannot be displayed". We are working to try to restore these posts. To prevent the blogs that were in New Posts from gaining an unfair advantage, all views that occurred since the service interruption will not affect earnings or rankings.

We very much apologize for the inconvenience. We know how important Blogit is to all of its members, and we are taking this problem very seriously. We have outlined an immediate plan of action.

Update 4/22 6:30 pm: All posts appear to be available except certain posts that were created or edited between 4/18 4:00 am and 4/21 1:00 am Blogit time. All comments are available. We very much regret the loss of any of your work.
