It's a wonder we survived the 20th century
When I was a kid toothpaste tubes were made out of lead. There was lead paint on pretty much everything. Asbestos was part of insulation in a lot of buildings. Mercury was in batteries and dental fillings. I probably still have some of that stuff in my mouth right now. Soft drink cans were made of...

Spit-shine on history
While the McCain/Palin retroactive bitch-slap continues I've noticed a number of items written trying to correct the attitudes of people who didn't like the Bush administration. These rebukes appear to be somewhat based on the assumption that respect is owed an office-holder out of the gate. It...

Good Interviewees, Bad Hires and Politicians
When asked why a certain employee was dismissed, managers often say that the person interviewed quite well but was incompetent or had attendance issues. In fact I said to a manager, who seemed bewildered that an employee had to go and went on and on about how well she interviewed, that it sounded...

Humans and Equines, the Difference
After a pack animal has served its purpose, the owners remove its burden because whatever it was carrying is needed elsewhere. When government uses the people as pack animals, we never reach a point where our purpose is served and the government removes the burden...if anything our burdens have...

Requiem for a Racist Joke
I first heard this joke about twenty-five years ago. In light of the events of last night I thought I'd drop a line or two about it. Jesse Jackson was praying one day and G-d answered. Lord, in my lifetime will there ever be a woman president? No Jesse. In your lifetime there will never be a woman...

No. Really. We just got the call.
When I was 21 I worked for a dodgy alarm monitoring company. One Sunday a burglary alarm came in from Corpus Christi. I went through the procedure and called the place to verify that it was a legit alarm and not O.E. So when no one answered I called the police. A very annoyed voice said, "YOU'RE...

Sorry ladies, but you're wrong
I was in college during the Reagan years and around 1985 a couple of girls I had a class with said that if mothers ran the nations of the world there would be no war. They hadn't met Sarah Palin. This has nothing to do with guns, hunting, self defense or defending one's family from attack, all of...

Nuts, but I have to wonder
My ex mentioned something a few years ago that in a sane world would be inconceivable but, well, we don't exactly have one of those. She said that TSA was going to set up some sort of party affiliation database and restrict travel to people who came up as one of the two major parties. So if you had...
