"Epidemicus Hospitalitus Beingsnotimusicaliosticophany"

When you work together daily, and under stressful conditions, things are bound to get heated between employees. However, when the stress level in the entire hospital is high and multiple incidents of being cranky are going on, I call it "Epidemicus Hospitalitus Beingsnotimusicaliosticophany" (sorry,... Tiny veins and the hand of God

Today, the Lord totally took my hands and allowed me to get one of the most difficult sticks I've ever had to do. A 6-week old little boy was running a fever and the doctor wanted - guess what - blood cultures. Cultures on a 2 year old - even a 1 year old I've done. Just freshly arrived from Heaven... The good - and difficult

Today, in the e.r., I was walking at my usual brisk pace when one of the patients waved me down. Emma G., who is very sweet, kind, is in her late 80's - recognized me from her last visit to Woodleigh E.R. and subsequent admission and stay with us. Emma's daughter was right by her side, and was very... Sign in to see full entry.

A glimpse inside of my life

I usually write about my job, and the patients and experiences I encounter in the hospital. It is probably the most interesting part of my life - but not the only part. I thought I would give you some facts about my life outside of "Woodleigh Regional." This afternoon, I arrived in the parking lot... Sign in to see full entry.

A pint and moxycontin

The e.r. is my favorite department at Woodleigh Regional. You never know what you will have come in - trauma, illness, fractures - people who've drunk a pint of whiskey...(ok, you may know where this is leading...). Ronald, my last patient is, to be blunt, snockered. Smashed, crocked, wasted,... Sign in to see full entry.

The glass isn't always half full, and the day doesn't always get better

It's been a few days since my last post - we've been busy, and I have not been feeling the best - no combination to blog, as it could get all soppy. However, there have been a few patients in that have caused me to sit up and take notice - or struggle to maintain my cheerful, positive demeanor. I am... Sign in to see full entry.

Little tiny arms and very big tears

I draw blood - and some patients are more challenging than others. However, NO patient I stick has proven to be more gut-wrenching than children, especially little ones. With older kids, say 7 and up - you can talk to them, explain what you are doing and probably get tears, but they'll try their... Sign in to see full entry.

Life and death and comings and goings

When I was a little girl and would see an ambulance rush by, I can remember wondering, "What are you doing in there and what is wrong that you are in such a hurry?" Many years later, I am at the destination for those ambulances (well, not the same ones, as if those are still driving around, there is... Sign in to see full entry.

Ya' think, Mr. D?

Today is proving to be a sister to the other day, only with potty breaks. My relief last night, Em, is young, but very, very good at her job. Her youth gives her reactions that make me laugh - which is what I'm writing about. Em was in room 6 of Woodleigh Regional Emergency Room, and the patient in... Sign in to see full entry.

When you don't have time to pee, it's busy...

If you read my blog, you know I write about the hospital I work in and the stuff that happens, the patients that come in and the doctors, nurses, egos and alter-egos. The past two days have been, well, to be blunt, hell. It is neither full moon nor a weekend. And yet, we have been hammered hard.... Sign in to see full entry.
