Working the Steps

What keeps us clean and sober is to work the steps. Going to meetings is not enough. We need to confront the alcholic and addict by exposing him or her to our conscious mind. Many of our behaviors are totally unconscious. Our car drives to the bar or liquor store without thinking. We automatically... Sign in to see full entry.

Recovery Means Change

The most important thing we change is our attitudes towards things, people and reality. Instead of doing what we want and building resentments to excuse our behavior, we do the right thing as much as possible and when wrong promptly admit it. Blame, anger, resentment are no longer acceptable... Sign in to see full entry.

Recovery is one day at a time

So even if you have thirteen years as I have, it is still just one day. So if I have bad days and look like someone in their first week, I'm okay. I only have one day. Sign in to see full entry.

I can only give what I have

This past year, I have started going to NA and have gotten a sponsor and started reworking the steps. But I'm beginning to feel that I have to work my own program and not try to imitate that of others. Just showing up at meetings and listening and speaking if I have something to say, will help me to... Sign in to see full entry.

Right now I need to go to meetings everyday.

I've been in recovery for thirteen years without a slip. The compulsion to drink has gone This week I've felt that urge to smoke, drink and take pain pills. I'm also suffering from a compulsion to pick at myself. It's embarrassing. Otherwise I feel good about life. I'm about to get my book published... Sign in to see full entry.

Why bother?

Not using drugs or alcohol seems like a strange thing. By the time you are ready to quit, you've done so much damage to your life that it takes years to recover physically, let alone mentally. Some don't. The problem is that you don't always die, you often spend years in jail and treatment. In... Sign in to see full entry.

My problem

I have a problem that I don't understand. Last summer I got bit by a lot of spiders and mosquitos. I also got blisters from a sunburn on my arm. Since then, I have been unable to stop picking at the scabs and the scar tissue that was the result. For a while my left arm will be clear and then I will... Sign in to see full entry.

God's Way or My Way

Addicts and alcoholics like to do things their way. Getting clean and sober doesn't change that habit. However, without learning how to do things God's way, they will soon lose their sobriety. There is a certain order to the universe. God takes time to do his work, we are in a hurry. If we do it our... Sign in to see full entry.

Up and Down

Recovery from chemical dependency is not all up. You will gain a better hold of your temper one day and explode over a mosquito the next day. One day you will be experiencing cravings, the next day you will not. As long as you are working your program, these negative experiences following positive... Sign in to see full entry.

Doing the footwork

A large part of recovery is running errands. You lost your license? So what do you need to do to get it back? You have to arrange to get on a payment plan for your fines, write a letter to the judge, apply for it, and pay your down payment. You may have to take a class or get into treatment....
