‘Touching’ history…

A couple of days ago Kabu and Wiley had a big argument, probably as intense as those two will ever argue! The issue? Who shot down the Red Baron! The Aussie Kabu said it was an Australian - the Canuck Wiley said it was Roy Brown, the Canadian. It’s amazing – almost one hundred years later Canadians... Sign in to see full entry.

I’m back…XVI

This will be the last post in this series – I guess everyone who still reads me will have gathered by now that I’m back, LOL…But there’s only so much of general interest to be found on a trip that was in many ways personal… On one occasion L and I went to Berlin for a day. He was picking up his... Sign in to see full entry.

I’m back…XV

At L’s village there are a few dairy farms left, but much of it has become ‘gentrified’, the properties being bought up by Hamburgers. (As an aside – what we call ‘Hamburgers’ are not a particularly popular food item in that part of the world; I checked – there are merely three McDonald’s outlets in... Sign in to see full entry.

I’m back…XIV

As I mentioned, I didn’t just hang around in Hamburg. I also took trips into the countryside, where L and J own a cottage. Located about 85 miles or so north of Hamburg, it’s actually a farmhouse at the very edge of a village. It’s a couple of centuries old, and protected under the State’s landmark... I'm back...XIII

A bit more about this trip… As I mentioned, in Hamburg one is never far from the water. Here’s the view from L and J’s condo. And no, it wasn’t that green yet in March. This is an earlier occasion – as I told you, I’ve been sailing there… Even downtown there are canals… Such as this one... And this... Sign in to see full entry.

The strangers' bedroom revisited…

Some of you may remember the encounter I had a couple of weeks ago, when someone in a parking lot warned me to get out of his bedroom… Well, I stopped by that place again yesterday. The happy couple is still living there, though when I arrived the man of the house wasn’t around. So, before going... Sign in to see full entry.

I’m back…XII

Hamburg is richly endowed with public transit. They have a subway, sometimes elevated, that looks after the inner city but also connects to the suburbs. They further have what’s called an S-Bahn, a ‘City Train’ (S stands for Stadt = City) that looks after the suburbs but also connects to the inner... Sign in to see full entry.

I’m back…XI

We might as well continue for a bit with the current theme – keeping the river in sight as it were, the river that is and has always been Hamburg ’s raison d’etre… On this occasion L and I took a drive to the suburbs, a place called Blankenese. We went along the famous Elbchaussee, which, as the... Sign in to see full entry.

I’m back…X

I went down to the port area more than once. Among other things they have fabulous seafood restaurants down there, where you get fish right off the boats… Here is one of those streets… This is the beginning of a kind of ‘eatery row’ quite different from the posh restaurants downtown, but its... I’m back…IX

I’ve got a lot more photos of the Elbphil and surrounding area, but unfortunately many didn’t find Blogit’s approval. After a lot of arguing back and force, it accepted what you’ll see below. This is one of the views of the Elbphil from street level, though not the nicest one. From here it looks... Sign in to see full entry.
