Kitchen upheavals

After committing to bringing home a cat on Thursday, I started looking around at what needs to be done to prep the house. My previous two cats never ate plants, never knocked things onto the floor for fun, rarely upset anything but me. This one, though, is an unknown! So yesterday I cleared all the... Kitchen upgrades

Over the weekend, the old toaster oven made way for a smallish/suitable for one air-fryer, and the old electric tea kettle for a new one. The air-fryer does all that the toaster oven could do, but also has a convection fan which circulates the hot around the food to cook it more evenly. Instead of... Sign in to see full entry.

Swordfish II

We had some lovely swordfish steaks last night while we watched LIFE OF PI. It has been quite a while, and I knew that last time there had been a secret for success in not overcooking this particular fish, but I couldn't remember what it was. But I did remember writing about it here. So I 'searched'... Sign in to see full entry.

odds and ends

In the war against the carbs, lettuce wraps are a great way to enjoy sandwich fillings. I had some seafood salad--mixed with coleslaw--wrapped in iceberg lettuce today. It was pretty tasty! I wouldn't suggest it as a sub for pb&j, however. A few nights ago I made some little meatballs with some... Sign in to see full entry.

much fish!

Last week an email came from Sizzlefish that my order of 12 portions of sablefish was on its way, should arrive by Friday. Well, it arrived Monday, the dry ice was totally gone, and the fish was about half frozen yet. I sent them word of the situation, and the next day they sent a reply that they... Sablefish

I'd never heard of this one, but when I ordered a box of frozen Alaska whitefish, I added that to the order. I'd never had it, never even heard of it, so I didn't know if it was going to be worth the extra cost. It was. Sablefish is also called black cod. It is very soft and buttery in texture, high... Then you saw it, now you don't...

On the quick-sale table at the grocery store last week, I picked up a little potted basil plant on its last legs. Anything on the table is $1, so it isn't much loss if it doesn't get used. But I was determined to use it, thinking of a Thai-style soup that uses Asian vegetables, coconut milk, lime... Sign in to see full entry.

It's not always about the cooking.

A while back, I suddenly noticed how very scudgey the cabinets were, what with several years of accumulated grease and dust and ick. It happens so gradually, if inevitably, and I just didn't notice how bad it was getting. The golden brown wood was dark around the knobs, and the knobs themselves were... Sign in to see full entry.

Savory biscuits

I promised the guys next door some biscuits today, and now the biscuits are out of the oven, but indications are that Charlie is not out of bed. Typically, he goes to bed 4am or later, even, so this is not unusual. I used Kodiak brand 'just add water' mix, added some cheddar cheese and diced ham and... Sign in to see full entry.

"Skinny my sandwich!"

That is an option at a particular sandwich shop I used to go to. (Haven't been back since they took everything I liked off the menu.) Now, I skinny my sandwiches at home to lose a bunch of the carbs and to make room for more of the good stuff in between the bread and the bread. This morning it was a... Sign in to see full entry.
