Whether its an individual trying to change a habit, or a society trying to change direction, the dynamics all revolve around beliefs. What does it take to change the habit of a person or a society? It takes a willingness to question and update some truth that has been cherished and defended for years, for generations. The network of beliefs, of evidences and proofs, of investment of emotion and resource has arrived at a situation in which has become a greater problem than the one it solved. It... It is too easy to say, There must not be war, or There must be peace. Is 'war' necessarily bloody physical conflict, or is it also oppression without the foot-soldiers walking steadfastly into enemy fire? Is it the quiet violence of a police state? Is it the lies a government tells its own people to stay in power and further its own agenda? Can it be any kind of opposing of perceived injustice? What is 'peace'? Is it simply the absence of bloody conflict? Is it status quo in which nothing... Sign in to see full entry.
It works in the short term only, perhaps, but that's enough for most people. The short term can be a long time, long enough for people who only think of their own immediate relief from pain, anxiety, discomfort, their sense of imbalance, injustice... It takes a kind of maturity and wisdom to put aside what it desirable for one's self in favor of what will be better for the world we pass along. People with kids have more of that sense-- sometimes. But the world is full of selfish parents, too.... Sign in to see full entry.
Last year I joined the ever-growing diagnosed type-2 diabetics club, and that has demanded a few changes in my life: More exercise... better food consumption... regular mealtimes... None of those changes are easy. But some of them are not as hard as one might think. Collateral discoveries: It is easier to exercise when traveling if one chooses destinations where one cannot resist the impulse to get out and walk! It's sitting at home that makes it a matter of choosing to get up and go out, or... Sign in to see full entry.
Once again, I am caught up in an on-going poetry contest on the Tolkien site I frequent. Here's the latest result-- an ottavo rima on the theme of Fangorn Wood: Dark, dark is the the rich earth where our roots sink deep. Gloomy the air where we reach towards the sky. Long, long the years we have stood here asleep; Diminished, our peace as the ages passed by. But now we awaken to realize the creep of tendrils of smoke, drifing bitter and dry: Our borders are breached and our enemies walk Under... Sign in to see full entry.
I have no problem with anyone saying Merry Christmas, and if they say it to me, I will say it back. Likewise, if someone prefers to wish me Happy Holidays, I am more than happy to be so blessed! If your joy in Kwanza is such that it spills over from your heart, I am delighted that you wish to share that joy with me! Thank you, thank you, for wishing me any kind of joy in this trying world! It's a ridiculous notion that anyone is being insulting or somehow deficitient in pc or in pc-freeness when... Sign in to see full entry.
Welcome to the 2006 Christmas Season USA! How about that commercial that shows how a guy using cash can just about ruin everyone's day...? How about the one that says home-made gifts are only appropriate for 7-year-olds...? The box can be small if the price tag is big... And are we going to have to listen to the Happy Holidays vs Merry Christmas nonsense again this year, or did everyone finally get how just pointless and selfish it was last year, to jam one or the other down anyone's throat as... Last August I signed off of Blogit for a time when even 12.95 made a significant difference in where I applied it. In September, I drove to visit my parents and sister in Colorado, then picked up some passengers in Salt Lake City for two weeks' adventure into the wonders of the Southwest. I came home with a new perspective on old friends, and nearly 2000 images. Since then, I have set up a cot in Photoshop, and a website -- http://clreye.googlepages.com/ -- and added some cups and calendars and... Sign in to see full entry.
( The poem I posted a few posts ago has acquired a supplement... a biographical note, and a commentary.) Laura, Susan and Margaret--three unkind, pettily vicious girls made my life as much of a hell as they could, when we were all classmates in 7th grade. At the end of the year, they had the gall to come up to me, and say, "We didn't mean it, we're sorry, we really like you..." by way of being magnanimous. I asked, "So what was wrong with the rest of the year?" They did not take that well, and... Sign in to see full entry.
Ever see Robin Williams in that movie, DEAD POETS SOCIETY, when, as a teacher, he pulls poetry out of a kid who just doesn't think he has poetry in him? I wrote this for another site where people who don't consider themselves poetic are trying to write poetry. I am looking for some feedback, regarding how effectively these simple suggestions bring out the poet in someone. (The poem at the end was originally written a year ago for this same group, and is always posted at the top of our... Sign in to see full entry.
