merry christmachanakwaanzika!

I have no problem with anyone saying Merry Christmas, and if they say it to me, I will say it back. Likewise, if someone prefers to wish me Happy Holidays, I am more than happy to be so blessed! If your joy in Kwanza is such that it spills over from your heart, I am delighted that you wish to share that joy with me! Thank you, thank you, for wishing me any kind of joy in this trying world! It's a ridiculous notion that anyone is being insulting or somehow deficitient in pc or in pc-freeness when... Sign in to see full entry.

December Rant: Another appalling commercial

Welcome to the 2006 Christmas Season USA! How about that commercial that shows how a guy using cash can just about ruin everyone's day...? How about the one that says home-made gifts are only appropriate for 7-year-olds...? The box can be small if the price tag is big... And are we going to have to listen to the Happy Holidays vs Merry Christmas nonsense again this year, or did everyone finally get how just pointless and selfish it was last year, to jam one or the other down anyone's throat as... Where the heck have I been?

Last August I signed off of Blogit for a time when even 12.95 made a significant difference in where I applied it. In September, I drove to visit my parents and sister in Colorado, then picked up some passengers in Salt Lake City for two weeks' adventure into the wonders of the Southwest. I came home with a new perspective on old friends, and nearly 2000 images. Since then, I have set up a cot in Photoshop, and a website -- http://clreye.googlepages.com/ -- and added some cups and calendars and... Sign in to see full entry.

We Might Have Been Friends -- addendum

( The poem I posted a few posts ago has acquired a supplement... a biographical note, and a commentary.) Laura, Susan and Margaret--three unkind, pettily vicious girls made my life as much of a hell as they could, when we were all classmates in 7th grade. At the end of the year, they had the gall to come up to me, and say, "We didn't mean it, we're sorry, we really like you..." by way of being magnanimous. I asked, "So what was wrong with the rest of the year?" They did not take that well, and... Sign in to see full entry.

If you think you're not a poet... Does this help?

Ever see Robin Williams in that movie, DEAD POETS SOCIETY, when, as a teacher, he pulls poetry out of a kid who just doesn't think he has poetry in him? I wrote this for another site where people who don't consider themselves poetic are trying to write poetry. I am looking for some feedback, regarding how effectively these simple suggestions bring out the poet in someone. (The poem at the end was originally written a year ago for this same group, and is always posted at the top of our... Sign in to see full entry.

Green Mansions

When I dreamed, in childhood, of living in a beautiful forest, surrounded by lush green mosses, elegant ferns, and tall trees, and little animals sharing their home with me, I didn't imagine it with long, rainy winters, or a freeway a mile or less through the woods. I never considered that small possums might make regular seasonal invasions of my house, or that I would find raccoons in my kitchen, dragging off bags of cat-food, or that I would ever be chasing a little squirrel leaping through... The Killing Jar

The lights, at night, drew a storm of life-- moths, of course, of many species, and just about any kind of winged insect... We borrowed the long-handled nets from the biology labs, and swept the frenetic clouds, just to see what we could get. Aiming for any individual creature was pointless-- they moved too fast to see what anything was, and one sweep of the net could not capture just one anything anyway. So we swooshed the nets through the storm, and then sorted out what we'd caught. Once, I... Sign in to see full entry.

LATE SUMMER AFTERNOON

Heavy as hot wet flannel, every breath... I hate to sit or move in this August afternoon. Sticky-damp, clothes cling, a drag against ambition. Birds, lethargic, sing only if they must, fly ghostlike if at all. Cicadas ratchet on and on-- maddeningly constant, and mosquitos whine or strike unheard, the devils! Roses overblown and bright, relishing this tropic season, exude aromas heavy and too sweet. I languish, scowling, discontent and longing for the night-- for sleeping cool and waking to a...
