Re: Kabu,

Yes, any time!

Seriously, that coffee breakfast is not going to keep you at your best, Mistress Nurse! As has been said elsewhere, you have to be good to you, to be good for Wiley!

Re: Re: Sincerity Anna,

Oatmeal at your house is going to be a real treat from now on!

If you cook the blueberries with the oatmeal, it turns it purple, which might appeal to your kids, too!

Re: TAPS,

This is all good to know! The higher sugar content of the bran, though, is the chief nutritional reason it might not be better in a diabetic diet.  I dont' know--the Know-Alls keep changing pronouncements.  It sure sound like most of the nutrition in oats is in the bran!

Re: Naut,

That sounds terribly healthy.  I don't much like the starchiness of uncooked oats.   That lunch sounds appealing, though.

Re: CCT,

I haven't been here enough seasons to know if I can grow black currants.  The beans were hopeless, and sugar snap peas which are usually so easy, likewise.  Didn't even sprout.  So I may get a bush or two next spring, but for now it is so much simpler to buy the preserves in a jar.

Don't cook so fast: turn the heat down.

I like raisins in oatmeal, too.

I love oatmeal. Not just the instant kind but the kind you cook as well. When I make it for the kids I always add the maple syrup. Love the idea of throwing blueberries and pecans in there too. AND if you could put blueberries in there why couldn't you also use strawberries and bananas. Thank you for this post! Wonderful oatmeal idea

I've never liked the feel of oatmeal in my mouth and struggled to eat it.  Then I found Quaker Oat Bran.  It is great--nutritionally, easy and quick to fix, and it tastes good.

"Both oat bran and oatmeal are capable of reducing bad cholesterol content, reducing risks of heart diseases, type 2 diabetes and cancer. Although both oat bran and oatmeal bear semblance to one another in terms of their health benefits, oat bran is slightly superior than oatmeal nutritionally. It is higher in fiber, protein and sugar content. 100 grams of oat bran corresponds to 15.4 grams of fiber, 17.3 grams of protein and 1.45 grams of sugar, while the same amount of oatmeal is equivalent to 10.1 grams of fiber, 13.15 grams of protein and 0.99 grams of sugar. Oat bran is also low in fat and calorie content. While 100 grams of oatmeal contains 370 calories, the same quantity of oat bran is tantamount to only 246 calories. Thus, nutritionally speaking, oat bran is better than oatmeal. Read more at Buzzle: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/oat-bran-vs-oatmeal.html"

My breakfast is simple...Raw rolled oats, a handful of blueberries, a little sugar, sprinkled with some cold water, and a cup of tea without milk or sugar - and that's it. Mid-morning, when I'm at home, I make myself a nice latte; for lunch a tomato with chopped sweet onion, some chopped Kalamata olives, lots of oregano, olive oil and a bit of balsamic vinegar, and of course a glass of wine. It's at supper when things get a little more interesting...

Can't you grow black currants Ciel I pulled most of my bushes up,

I prefer raspberries or blackberries. Once a long time ago

I picked half an hundred weight of black currants at 6 old pence a pound.

The bread that I have now has sunflower seeds, but no wheat.

It is alright but a bit dry.  I usually have 'Quick cook oats' two minutes

and a handful of raisins thrown in. I usually burn the saucepan

a cup of Cocoa and a moosy onto Blogit.

Re: FormerStudentIntern.

I know a lot of people don't care for the texture of the rolled oats.  I don't mind that, but prefer the steel-cut oats, as they have more definite texture and are less... slippery.

Got no liking at all for instant.

It has been a long while since I have had oatmeal.

Re: Annicita,

If only there were a TJ in this area!  They are just now building one in Denver and another in Boulder.  But I can check the catalog idea.

If I can find a nice little British commestibles import shop, those are fun to visit.  They usually carry Commonwealth products, like TimTams, too!

Re: Pat,

I sometimes I will poach an egg in soup or salsa or some other saucy sort of thing. Great, with some kind of real bread toast for sopping up!

I like the oatmeal with blueberries and walnuts, but some days

it just ain't breakfast unless it's a scrambled egg and a portion-controlled side of hashbrowns with onions. Olive oil is good for frying the potatoes, not much salt.
