There must be quite the story behind the hats, but like she said, not the time for it! I do like a mystery! sam

I loved it when my mother wore a hat.  When I was a child, she always wore one to church, to special occasions, when she went to town, etc.  One time she took us to town on a really windy day and walking down Petticoat Lane her hat blew off and went dancing down the street behind her.  My sister and I were surprised when she just kept walking down the sidewalk without a backward glance.  It wasn't long before some man was running after us and waving the hat that he had rescued and calling out.  Mother thanked him very sweetly but as soon as he was out of earshot, she said, "Damn, I am so tired of wearing this hat and was so happy when it blew away."  LOL

When she put away her hats she put away that part of her life with them...A poignant bit of memory...

A lovely story of little girls with their mum that added a new portrait of her they had never imagined. I could imagine you building a love story around that.

Re: Re: Amazing how much we don't know about those we live with closely--

I didn't know until around that age that my stepmom, who told us she had come within a couple of units of a BS in biology, never mentioned that she actually held a degree in home economics.

And my stepsister, her daughter, was put out to learn, when she was in her 30s, that her parents divorced before his death, when she was 2 or 3.  It was also years before Mom told us that there had been another marriage that had failed.

I think secrets always come out, blanks get filled in and corrected.

This brought to mind flashes of Meryl Streep and The Bridges of Madison County.

In twenty odd years anything could have happened. We shall have to await the deleted post.

Ciel, I lived for decades under the assumption we kids knew all about our mother's life, only to find out when I was 50-something  she'd been keeping a major secret right under our noses.

My parents kept a lot from us, too.

Sometimes we have strange emotions attached to certain things and for whatever reason we don't express them.🌹
